5. What is retention time? And briefly explain the capacity of retention time, primarily
clarifiers, Oxidation tank, Secondary Clarifier, Reaction time based on 40 m 3/hr.
Retention time is the time it takes a solute to travel through the collum. Retention time is the
measure of the amount of time as solute spends in a Collum. It is the time spend in a stationary
phase or a mobile phase.
Reaction time for 40 m3/hr.:
8 hr. retention time for equalization 20-22 hr. for 40 m3/hr.
Equalization tank capacity 5-9,00,000 litter

Md. Nazmul Hassan

B.Sc. in Textile Engineering (PCIU) 2
BTE-008 (Day)
Primary Clarifier retention time:
12 hr. for 60 m3/hr.
Capacity 1-3 lakh litter
Depth 12-15 feet
Oxidation tank retention time:
48 hr.
Capacity 2.5-3 lakh litter
Depth 12-15 feet
D-Colorant retention time:
50,000 litter unit for 5-6 hr.
Secondary clarifier retention time:
1-2 hr.
Capacity 1 lakh litter

6. Define BOD, COD & PH.

BOD:
Measurement of the oxidizing organic matter in waste water is usually achieved through
determining the 5 days Bio-logical oxygen demand BOD5 AT 20 0C, BOD5 is a measured of the
quantity of dissolved oxygen used by micro-organics in the bio-organics in the bio-chemical
oxidation of the organic matter is waste water.
COD:
COD is a measure of the oxygen equivalent of the organic material chemically oxidized in the
reaction & in determined by adding dichromate in and acid solution of the waste water.
PH:
PH is a measure of the concentration of Hydrogen ion(H+) in waste water & gives an indication of
how acid or alkali in the waste water. So standard PH range here 1-14. Here 1-6.7 is acetic &
more than 7 is base. But Standard PH limit of discharge range 6-9.
