TRANSFORMATIONS

FAITH PULLUM
First Grade TEKS

(6) Geometry and measurement. The student applies mathematical process standards to analyze attributes of
two-dimensional shapes and three-dimensional solids to develop generalizations about their properties. The
student is expected to:
(A) classify and sort regular and irregular two-dimensional shapes based on attributes using informal
geometric language;
(D) identify two-dimensional shapes, including circles, triangles, rectangles, and squares, as special
rectangles, rhombuses, and hexagons and describe their attributes using formal geometric language;
(E) identify three-dimensional solids, including spheres, cones, cylinders, rectangular prisms (including
cubes), and triangular prisms, and describe their attributes using formal geometric language;
TRANSFORMATION DEFINED

A transformation is a
movement of a geometrical
figure that does not change
the size or shape of a
figure.
EXAMPLE
Translation,
Rotation, and
Reflection are all
examples of the
different types of
transformations.

TRANSLATION DEFINED

A translation is the movement of a geometric figure to a new position

without flipping or turning it.
A tip that will help you remember the translation definition is that the
middle letters SL stand for the first letters in the word SLIDE. Which is
what is the action that takes place when translating a figure.

REFLECTION DEFINED

A reflection is a figure formed by flipping a geometric figure over a line of

reflection to obtain a mirror image. In a reflection transformation you take
the pre-image and flip it across a line of reflection to create a new reflected
image.
REFLECTION EXAMPLE

An example of reflection would be pint A on the following graph. The

original coordinates are (2,1) but when reflected along the x-axis it
becomes (2,-1).

ROTATION DEFINED

A rotation transformation occurs when there is the turning of a figure about a

fixed point. When performing a rotation the center of the rotation is fixed
and everything else on the plane rotates around that point.
ROTATION EXAMPLE

An example of a rotation
transformation is the
following picture. In the
picture the triangle is being
rotated along the (+) line.
