Design of mold (2 part) in CATIA

By: Binayak Bhandari (11th August, 2017)

1. Create Blank Product File using one of the methods below
a. File > New> New window> scroll down the List of types to find Product.
b. Start > Mechanical Design > Assembly Design
2. While Product1 selected (highlighted), open Core & Cavity Workbench (Start
>Mechanical Design > Core & Cavity Design).

a. This will create a new part in the Product.

b. Highlight (make active) the recently created Part1.
c. Under Part1, select xy plane or any other plane.
3. Import the CAD model existing using the Import Model function
a. Insert> Models>Import

1
4. Choose the xy-plane as reference and use 1.02 expansion ratio. (Meaning that the
imported model will be 2% larger than the original CAD design.

2
5. Go to Generative Shape Design Workbench (Start> Shape > Generative Shape Design

6. Use the Extract tool on the Operations Toolbar (or Insert > Operations > Extract) to
create only outer surface.
a. Use Tangent continuity in the Extract dialogue box and select the outer surface
of the bottle.
7. Join all the surfaces (Insert > Operations > Join) to create a single surface.
NOTE: Until now what we have done is summarized below:

3
a. We have created a model which is 2 % bigger than the original CAD model, this
is because the mold should be slightly bigger than the final product (to
compensate shrinkage, draft angle etc.)
b. All the surfaces of the imported CAD model were joined together to create a
single surface, for further operations.
