Rabindranath Tagore was one of the greatest poets of the world.He was
affectionately called as Gurudeb.The National Anthem of India, Jana Gana
Mana and the National Anthem of Bangladesh were both written by him.

Tagore was born on 7th May 1861 at Kolkata.He found school boring.He
wrote his first verse at thw age of seven.In the year 1878,he went to England to
study further.On his return he wrote many poems,short stories,novels,plays
and essays.His collection of poems called Gitanjali won the Nobel Prize for
literature in the year 1913.He composed over a thousand songs known as
Rabindra Sangeet.He was not only a good singer but also a good painter.

In 1901,Tagore started a school at Shantiniketan(abode of

peace),150kms from Kolkata.The classes in this school were held in the open
air,under the trees.Tagore felt that nature was the best teacher.Subjects like
art,music and dance were also taught.In the year 1918,Tagore started a
university called Vishwa Bharati.Students from all over the world enrolled in
this university.Tagore passed away on 7th August,1941.
