Course Description
Environmental science is interdisciplinary; it embraces a wide variety of topics from different areas of
study. Yet there are several major unifying constructs, or themes, that cut across the many topics
included in the study of environmental science. The following themes provide a foundation for the
structure of the AP Environmental Science course.
1. Science is a process.
Science is a method of learning more about the world.
Science constantly changes the way we understand the world.
2. Energy conversions underlie all ecological processes.
Energy cannot be created; it must come from somewhere.
As energy flows through systems, at each step more of it becomes unusable.
3. The Earth itself is one interconnected system.
Natural systems change over time and space.
Biogeochemical systems vary in ability to recover from disturbances.
4. Humans alter natural systems.
Humans have had an impact on the environment for millions of years.
Technology and population growth have enabled humans to increase both the rate and
scale of their impact on the environment.
5. Environmental problems have a cultural and social context.
Understanding the role of cultural, social, and economic factors is vital to the
development of solutions.
6. Human survival depends on developing practices that will achieve sustainable
systems.
A suitable combination of conservation and development is required.
Management of common resources is essential.

Interactive Notebooks
All assignments and labs will be kept in a composition notebook. Interactive notebooks are an
opportunity for students to interact with material in a creative, independent fashion. It will also allow
them to keep their papers organized and together, forming a journal over the year to record their
entire learning process.
Group Work
Science at its very core is reliant on collaboration and interactivity. The majority of classwork is done
in a group of 3-4. It is expected that students will be on task and participate with their group, and will
not depend on their classmates to complete assignments for them.
Flipped Classroom
Due to the extensive knowledge required in an AP science curriculum, the majority of initial learning
will be done at home and class time is designed to focus on review and application. Similar to reading
a textbook before class, students will instead have an instructional video to watch to help them learn
the material. Videos are posted online well in advance, organized by date, and listed on the weekly
and monthly calendar in the classroom. Students will have a short entrance ticket quiz at the
beginning of class the next day based on the material presented in the video, but they will be allowed
to use notes they took while watching it. These notes are turned in with the quiz, and returned to
them once the grades are inputted.
Test Structure
The testing process will take place over 4 days. They will first have a review day, then a day for
multiple choice, a day for the FRQ, and finally a day for FRQ peer grading. The test will be 100 points
total, with the multiple choice worth 60 points and the FRQ worth 40 points. This is meant to mimic
the weight given to each section on the actual AP exam. The tests will be timed similar to the AP
exam, with 40 minutes given to answer 50 multiple choice questions, and 40 points given to answer 2
FRQ questions. Finally, the FRQ peer grading process is as follows:
- On the FRQ test day, students label their papers with a seat number, and I label their papers
with a color that coordinates to their class period. This is all to preserve anonymity of the
papers.
- Papers are distributed to students in another class period with a rubric and detailed grading
sheet.
- I review the grading sheets for accuracy before inputting their grades.
FRQ peer grading is designed for students to get immediate feedback on their FRQ in terms of
content knowledge and aspects on which the AP graders will be scoring them.
Students are allowed to make corrections to their tests for possible half credit back before the end of
the quarter, but appointments during lunch will need to be made, and the full lunch period should be
allotted.
Grading
Assignments are all in the same category, but are given different point values based on level of effort
required.
Every Friday, notebooks are peer graded based on completion, organization, and neatness. Each day,
notebooks are collected at the end of class based on a rotating schedule (so if 1st period turns them in
on Monday one week, theyll turn them in Tuesday of next week, and so on). Upon collection, peer
grades will be checked for accuracy, labs will be graded based on correction and completion, and all of
these grades will be inputted. The schedule for when each periods notebooks are collected are posted
on the weekly and monthly calendar in the classroom.
