1. Do we have a school improvement plan? Yes, the team began drafting the plan at a
summer workshop on June 15.
2. Is there a current issue or problem area in the school improvement plan? The plan
includes three goals:
1. All students will read at or above grade level by 3rd grade and continue to
read at or above grade level thereafter.
2. All students will meet or exceed grade-level and course-specific curriculum
standards.
3. All students will be healthy, informed, and productive citizens.
3. Could I have a copy of the plan if we have one? I shared it as a Google document with
you. Remember, this is in draft form.

Current issue or problem area in my school improvement plan

As I was reading over the School Improvement Plan I noticed that there was a great
emphasis on getting students to be on or above grade level by grade 3. Of course we
would want all the students to be on grade level so they are able to understand the
complex Common Core Standards. Im just concerned with this as a goal because many
students are already grade levels behind. Once a student reaches 3rd grade they are
expected to be reading at a 3rd grade level. This is challenging with a diverse group of
students. The teachers do a great job of teaching rigorous instruction and giving effective
feedback, but it would be difficult to ensure that all students are reading at or above grade
level by 3rd grade.

Steps to address the issue

This would mean that the primary teachers would need to ensure that students are getting
the foundational skills necessary to be lifelong learners. They would need to make
learning fun and with a calm and comfortable environment. Proper intervention would
also need to be in place to reach the students that arent making growth.
With not being a Title I school, it is a challenge to get additional support because the
special education teachers are stretched thin to meet the neediest students that have
Individual Education Plans (IEPs). This would be vital that there would small group
instruction and pull-out groups to meet the needs of the struggling learners.
We want to show that students are showing growth. Some students it isnt possible for
them to make a whole years growth. Maybe it would be better if the goal stated that 80%
of the students were reading at or above grade level. With our school being an
impoverished school, the students arent getting all the help they need at home to make a
whole years growth.
It would be wonderful to have all students make growth but with the services we have in
the building and what we are able to do during a school day makes it very challenging to
ensure that student got the appropriate amount of sleep, food to eat, and love at
home. We try to give the students all they need so they are ready for the school day but
we only have them for a short amount of time.

I will be on the SIT team this upcoming school year and I look forward to sharing my ideas and
getting feedback from other individuals on the SIT team for the upcoming 2017-2018 school
year. I will bring my ideas and insights of my administrative learning to the table.
