program

Element 2.1, 2.2

Artifact 1.1.1

8/8/17 (2 Hours)

There is a student in the summer school program that has a difficult time focusing on
tasks. He will yell out, crawl around on the floor, and is unresponsive. He will simply scream
and distract the other students in the classroom. He also will not take direction from his aide to
leave the classroom and or a break. It is very challenging because he is disrupting the learning of
the other students in the classroom. The group of students do a wonderful job of simply ignoring
him and trying to focus on the teacher.

After making it through the first day of summer school with him, we met as a team to
brainstorm ideas to help create a better environment for all of the learners in the classroom. He
displayed these behaviors during the regular school year and it would appear that some behaviors
have escalated. We talked about how some of his triggers are writing, asked to complete work,
and not getting attention or getting too much attention. The team decided that there are no
rewards or places in the school that would benefit him because once he reaches his melt down
point there is no negotiating with him. Needless to say, the first day of summer school was
challenging with this student. We decided to be in close contact with the mother and discuss
how his day went.

It was great to be able to talk with the aide that supports this student, the special
education case manager, his math and reading teachers, and myself to talk about the needs of this
individual. This student needs to feel in a safe environment and trust the staff that is working
with him. It would be beneficial for the aide and the teachers to get to know the student and
understand what would help him succeed in the classroom. This is challenging since we only
have the students in summer school for twelve days.
