5 Definition of terms

Throughout this research regarding the isolation of Subtilosin-A producing Bacillus subtilis from
three corn varieties, the following terms will be encountered:

Bacteriocin. This is the classification for proteins such as Subtilosin - A, which has a wide
spectrum of pathogen inhibition.
Bacillus subtilis. This is the species which serves as the secretion site of subtilosin-A. It
is the bacterium which the researchers wish to isolate from three different corn varieties.
Contact dependent inhibition. A natural inhibitory process where the Bacillus subtilis
produces antimicrobial bioproducts to stop the growth and development of Streptoccocus
pneumoniae.
Microbial competition. This is the struggle between the Bacillus subtilis and
Streptoccocus pneumoniae which takes in the form of contact-dependent inhibition. .
Microbial inhibition. This is the ability of Subtilosin - A to stop the life process of illness-
causing bacteria, to prevent unwanted diseases.
Pathogens. This is the collection of illness-causing bacterium which the subtilosin - A
aims to destroy.
Streptoccocus Pneumoniae. This refers to a pathogenic bacteria which the researchers aim to
eliminate.
