Geologic Map of Bacong
General
Submission of this report is in compliance with the requirement of Stratigraphy Class (Geol
321) under the guidance of Mr. Hernulfo B. Ruelo, Instructor.
Fieldwork was conducted last February 19, 2015 at a quarry site in the vicinity of Malangwa
River, Bgy. Sugon, Bacong Municipality. Three sites were chosen as representatives for
constructing the stratigraphic column in the quarry area. The three sites are shown in the inset
of Figure 1.
During the time of survey, the group participants did not bring a GPS unit to take the
coordinates so the location of the quarry site was determined approximately from the available
maps such as the terrain map provided by Mr. Ruelo, geologic map quadrangle 3647 IV -
Dumaguete, and open cycle map (google map). From the geologic map presented in Figure1 the
approximate location of the fieldwork site was marked by a red circle.
The quarry activity in the area is active and manual mode of extraction of materials was
observed; there is no apparent utilization of heavy equipment nor drill and blast. The materials
being extracted consist of sand, gravel and boulders.

Geology of the Quarry Site

The quarry site is typically composed of unconsolidated alluvial deposits which makes up the
vast portion of Bacong Municipality particularly from the site going eastward to the direction of
the coastal area. From the quarry site going westward towards the mountainous terrain, the
lithology is dominated by pyroclastics. Both lithologies are Quaternary in age (source, MGB).

Stratigraphy of Quarry Site at Malangwa River, Bgy. Sugon, Bacong

Municipality
Three sites at the quarry area were chosen as representatives to show the stratigraphic
columns of the area. Stratigraphic column for each site was constructed and then these three
sites were given correlation at Figure 3. All lithologic thicknesses were just approximation based
from the photographs taken at the site, see Figure 4.
Based from the sections, the area appears to be uniformly underlain by Quaternary Formation
consisting of the overlying alluvial deposits which are loose and detrital in composition. These
are the most favored quarry materials which range in sand to boulder sizes. Its detrital nature
makes it easy for quarry operations to extract.
These Alluvial materials were deposited in a fluvial environment with high to very high energy
that carried the mix of sand, gravel and boulder materials to their present location.
Beneath the alluvium are the pyroclastic materials which are composed of the remnants or
fragments of igneous rocks like dacite and andesite and volcanic ejected materials consisting of
tuff, glass and ash. Because these were produced from volcanic eruptions which are later
transported by stream, the resulting pyroclastics were very poorly sorted.
Pyroclastics share the same stratigraphic age like the alluvium. These pyroclastics are also very
easy to extract for quarry materials. See Figure 2.

The outcrop on Site 2 looks exactly the same as the outcrop on Site 1. The strata
are continuous on planar bedding. The layers are graded coarse to fine grained.

The outcrop on Site 3 shows thinner layer of mixed rocks ranging from pebble to
boulder in size combined with sand and organic materials. The second layer is
almost the same as the first with alternating sand and gravel with local thin
bedding. The base layer comprises 50 percent of the outcrop and it is composed
of Tuffaceous materials particularly ash and glass with remnants of gravel size
igneous rocks.
The 3 outcrops can be correlated as it shows similar stratigraphic sections.
