SUGGESTED FORMAT OF THE BILL OF MATERIALS AND SUMMARY COST ESTIMATES After determining the various materials needed for the construction project and computing the corresponding quantities required, the data should be organized and presented like the sample Bill of Materials shown on the following pages. It also includes the summary cost estimates for materials, labor and other construction expenses. A unique feature of our bill of materials is the “portrait" format containing the drawings and ‘Specifications of the doors and windows for the project. This presentation is also adaptable for wrought iron griles, steel gates and other prefabricated building components. Among its advantages: (1) the ‘drawings are more handy when soliciting price quotations from suppliers; (2) they save on drafting work because the illustrations in the bill of materials need not be drawn in the project working drawings anymore. Moreover, file copies of designs also used in other projects can be readily reproduced by Photocopying or white printing (for originals on tracing paper), thereby eliminating the need for re-dratting asoften as the need arises. The first column in our bill of materials should show the descriptions. of the required articles. As ‘much as possible, the brand names of manufactured praducts should also be included. They must be the ‘same as those mentioned in the project's Specifications, Under Quantity the estimated number of pieces, volume, etc. of the materials should be entered, ‘The appropriate units of measure by which they are sold are shown under the column Unit. Unit Gost refers to the sale price per the indicated unit of measure of the commodity to be bought. Its Total Cost is the product of the quantity and the unit cost of the material required. Initially, these two columns may be left biank until one has obtained the prevailing prices of the desired ‘onstruction materials. The current cost can he verified from dealers or manufacturers thru the telephone ‘or by providing them copies of the bill af materials wherein they can indicate their price quotations, To itlustrate how the bill of materials. should be completed, answers which we are to assume as ‘appropriate at the time this was prepared are entered in all the columns under the heading, |. Foundation, Concrete Columns, Beams and Concrete Hollow Block Walls, The amount that ‘appears across the heading is the sum of all the total costs of materials listed under it The last page of the bill of materials contains a suggested format for summarizing the overall expenses for a small construction project. The total cost of the materials is the sum of all the computed amounts shown acrass the headings in the bill of materials. To give allowance for overlooked items, Miscellaneous heading is included and its estimated cast would depend upon the estimator's thoroughness and the degree of completeness of the materials already listed. Other headings should be added where so required by the project. The cost of labor can be obtained from reputable labor contractors. It may range front 30% to 35% of the total projected expenses for materials. Contingencies are also included to take care of unexpected rise in the costs of labor and materials, Payment for the various constructions permits and for supervision fees are part of the indirect expenses. If the construction is to be undertaken by a contractor, other costs would include the contractor's tax and profit, overhead expenses, etc. Asa
