    Sand tar is created through a multi-step process. Raw bitumen is extracted from oil sands and then separated from sand, clay and water. The bitumen is then upgraded through a coking process using heat to break it down into lighter hydrocarbon molecules like gasoline, diesel and kerosene. This upgraded bitumen is known as synthetic crude oil or sand tar.
