Poetic terms

What Am I?

Aims:

To practise recognition of similes, metaphors, alliteration and


onomatopoeia, and to produce examples of these words.

Target level:

Year 7 upwards.

Materials:

1. Teacher photocopies and laminates the cards. Four copies per group
should be sufficient.
2. Teacher cuts up cards and puts in a pile face down. One pile per
group.

Instructions:

1. First student in the group picks top card from pile and without looking
at it, puts it on his/her forehead.
2. Students in group have to shout examples of that terminology until the
student guesses the word on the card. (E.g. if the student has
onomatopoeia students shout out examples of onomatopoeia.)
3. Student then returns to seat and next person in the group picks a card.
4. Repeat procedure until all the cards have gone.
5. The group that finishes first is the winner.
