Ramirez BSA V The Seven Sacraments Matter, Form, and Minister (with Biblical basis)
1. Sacrament of Baptism
Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father,
and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded
you." --- Gospel of Matthew 28:19-20
Matter: The candidate is immersed in water, or water is poured over the
candidate's head.
Form: "I baptize you in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the
Holy Spirit."
Minister: Bishops, Priests, Deacons; any Christian (in case of urgent need)
2. Sacrament of Confirmation
Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they
sent to them Peter and John, who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the
Holy Spirit; for it had not yet fallen on any of them, but they had only been baptized in the
name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid their hands on them and they received the Holy
Spirit." ---- Acts of the Apostles 8:14-17
Matter: Hand on the person and anointing him with Holy Chrism (blessed oil)
Form: "Be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit."
Minister: Bishops; in some cases also Priests
3. Sacrament of the Eucharist
"I am the living bread which came down from heaven; if anyone eats of this bread,
he will live forever; and the bread which I shall give for the life of the world is my
flesh." ---Gospel of John 6:51
Matter: unleavened bread and grape wine that are blessed/consecrated by the
minister and received/shared by the communicants.
Form: " This My Body which will be given up for you. Do this in memory of
Me. . . . Take this, all of you, and drink from it: this is the cup of my Blood, the
Blood of the New and Everlasting Covenant. It will be shed for you and for all
so that sins may be forgiven. Do this in memory of me."
Minister: Bishops or Priests
4. Sacrament of Penance/ Reconciliation
"If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are
retained"--- John 20:23
Matter: The verbal confession of sins, contrition, and priestly words of
absolution
Form: God, the Father of mercies, through the death and resurrection of his
Son has reconciled the world to himself and sent the Holy Spirit among us for
the forgiveness of sins; through the ministry of the Church, may God give you

pardon and peace, and I absolve you from your sins in the name of the Father,
and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit."

5. Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick
So they (the Twelve Apostles) went off and preached repentance. They drove out many
demons, and they anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them." --- Gospel of Mark
6:12-13
Matter: Anointing with oil and imposition of hands.
Form: Through this holy anointing may the Lord in his love and mercy help
you with the grace of tht Holy Spirit. Amen May the Lord, who frees your
spirit from sin, save you and raise you up. Amen."

6. Sacrament of Holy Orders
"Do this in memory of me."- Gospel of Luke 22:19 & 1 Corinthians 11:25
Matter: The bishop lays his hands on the ordinand's head; he also anoints his
hands and performs several other symbolic gestures
Form: Consecratory prayer: We ask you, all powerful Father, give these
servants of yours the dignity of the presbyterate. Renew the Spirit of holiness
within them. By your divine gift may they attain the second order in hierarchy
and exemplify right conduct in their lives,"
Minister: Bishop only
7. Sacrament of Matrimony / Marriage
"For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife,
and the two shall become one flesh." - Genesis 2:24
Matter: Christian man and Christian women. Mutual Consent and Covenant to
live together as husband and wife and the consummation of the marriage.
(Rings are exchanged as a visible sign of this verbal commitment.)
Form: The exchange of wedding vows. The "I do", by which both spouses
indicate their mutual consent to the marriage covenant.
"I, (name), take you, (name), to be my husband/wife. I promise to be true to
you in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health. I will love you and
honor you all the days of my life."
(or a similar formula)
Minister: Husband and wife through their mutual consent to be wed. The
priest or deacon acts as a witness and confers a blessing upon the couple, but
he does not administer the sacrament of matrimony.
