This first book is a collection of


the most significant images i
made with different cameras
including even some mobile
phones are able to realize
pictures of considerable quality.
It is not an encyclopedia, not
even a celebration of myself, but
I thought it useful to the reader
watch, try to imitate and
implement the same photos that
audience, trying to give some
advice to people who want to
make photography a profession
serious.

Sax Moving

A fun photo shoot, made during


a shooting for making of the new
cd cover of the jazz band "Luca
Donini Quartet" in 2006.
Locked position of the camera
but without using a tripod
opening the diaphragm.
I wanted to put the microphone
at the picture center, the only
fixed component of the
framework...with the idea to give
it the right emphasis...At the end
without it would not hear any
musical note.
Hallo-Smoke

Smoking is a scenic element


essential for cinematography or
photography. It makes it more
realistic scenes, creating an
additional depth of field than the
normal cameras. The main
difficulty in this case is to
illuminate the scene with smoke,
without that this seems a haze
annoying. Fumes and mists are
often used inappropriately and
only create negative effects on
chrominances.
Fusion

Take the details of an image or


situation that we are facing, is
not trivial. The mistake we often
make is to think that particular
detail or close-ups, do not make
the idea of the situation that we
are photographing. Far from it.
This detail of the brass door that
is located in Turin, brings to mind
the majesty of the same, causing
the imagination of his own
greatness and heaviness.
Sand&Feel

During the making of the video


clip of Cassandra DeRosa in
2010 where is this particular
scene, the setting and the
lighting environment, have
contributed to the production of
this poetic and romantic scene.
The disjunction between sky and
sea-sand is clearly underlined by
the roadside of sand on which to
walk Cassy. The only point of
union between the two is the
white veil, known purity between
elements.
Desert

Establish times and places to


make images like this, is
essential for the success of the
photograph, even if it is linked to
the realization of a video clip or
movie. The frame shown here is
an example of this mode design,
which must leave the case only a
few elements not relevant for the
purpose. The idea of wilderness
here is almost immediate.
101 Zen Stories

A few years ago along with a


group of actors very creative, it
was decided to create a
dedicated format to Zen stories.
Transformed into a series of
small movies, necklace clip had
to totally immerse the viewer in
the idea of Zen stories told in the
book.
The central idea of this story was
the splitting of a personality, the
ego and the superego. Probably
we succeeded.
A cup of tea

In the scene of the Cup of Tea


the script provided that the cup
was filled to the brim to
represent the complex
personality of the individual full of
himself. The scene followed the
script, with the difference that
the main actor came to manage
trabordante a cup of tea that
spilled on the scene as a small
river of tea, causing the hilarity of
the actress who produced this
beautiful frame emblematic.
Elevation

Sometimes use a lift can give


you ideas and emotions entirely
new. It 's the case of an elevator
at the Hotel DeParis of Sanremo,
designed with an external glass
wall that overlooks the Orthodox
Church in the town. What you
see is amazing elevator, going up
to the upper floors of the hotel, it
seems to drown slowly the
church and its domes.
Tesla

In 2010 Teslamotors offers for


sale the first car spider, high-
performance, all-electric with a
range of 390 miles. As part of
the marketing Italian, we
m a n a g e d s o m e p ro m o t i o n
activities of the car, making films
and photographs specially
designed to spread the message
"go electric" that accompanies
the Tesla brand.
Fashion 1 & 2

The photo for fashion or


catalogs, it is totally different
from the classic photography. In
such cases the use of light in the
scene is crucial to the realization
of a photograph of merit, which
has well-defined characteristics.
The dress on a black
background in this image, is a
striking example of the choice of
the front light and backlight, all
equipped with the bank diffuser.
The black background helps in
the choice of the position of
points of light, with the aim to
increase the contrast and
exaggerate the contours of the
model and the same gown.

Fashion 3

Use a wall range with fancy


pattern, can be a fun diversion to
create modern images, which
also make use of diffused
shadow on the wall of the model.
In this case you need only a
single diffuse light to give the
desired effect. In the photograph
to the left, we used only two soft
light bank, one of which at full
power, while the second to 1/4
power, all for a more effective
diffusion of the shadow, without
the annoying flash effect.
Blue Water 1

When you want to capture a


moment of a moving scene, we
must learn to work very well with
the shutter speed (shutter).
Keeping the fixed focal length
and aperture chosen to optimize
light in the scene, you can create
countless different compositions.
In the two images below we
used only a different time of
shutter to better assess the
drops of water of this fountain lit
from within.
Blue Water 2

The problem of omnidirectional


light live camera view, must be
managed very carefully. The
incident light of this frame can
change based on the settings of
the camera, as we can not
change the light source,
consisting of a color-critical
digital sensors: electric blue.
To highlight the splashes of
water must therefore make the
shutter faster, until it centers with
discrete approximation, the
average speed of water outlet.
Crystal

Let's change the scene


completely. Make a sort of still-
life without having the proper
equipment is really an almost
impossible task, but there are
situations and lighting likely to
favor these photographs. It 's the
case of Swarovsky shops that
often are real photo shoots in the
window, already ready to use,
especially in the evenings, when
the stage lights are the most
effective. As the shops
Swarovsky using very advanced
lighting systems, take advantage
of these opportunities is really a
race to "the best in show", but
the effects that can be achieved
by working with shutter speed
and aperture, are very
interesting. Try it yourself.
Glasses

Photographing the crystal, glass,


transparent objects in general, is
perhaps the most fascinating
thing that a cinematographer can
design. The main challenge in
the management of the light and
of all possible reflections that are
located in the surrounding
environment, it is more complex
than a classic set, but the
transparent surfaces oblige us to
a more precise shutter speed,
depth of field, in addition to
further deepen plans to focus
available. Then we can obtain
the correct exposure of
transparency, resulting in a
unique picture of the many tests
that will be made.
Sweet moments

When you come across scenes


like this, it is difficult to remain
indifferent and do not take a
picture. This only seems
croissant largest being in the
foreground is certainly a first
floor, but the proportion with
other sweets neighbors is really
strange. The game is soon
revealed ... it is simply a
croissant an exceptional
measure (about 40 cm). Putting
it in a location like this, as a
whole does not seem so great,
but the geometric proportions tell

Flowers and blur

In this shot, the only floral


element that stands out on all
colors is certainly a small group
of red petals. Not coincidentally,
this image was obtained with a
very short rotation to the left of
the camera during the opening
of the shutter curtain. The result
obtained (without using a tripod)
is a slight radial blur which helps
to mix all the colors, giving the
picture a pleasant confusion of
colors. There are no special
effects in this photograph (as in
all the others, except for some
vignetting and the use of external
filters). All that was achieved after
some testing is visible and can
be obtained with the technique
described.
In style

Photographing large rooms is


always a challenge and the
difficulty increases when we are
also very large window, which let
light outside so very domineering
(especially when there is the sea
reflecting the sun). The
colorimetric dominant blue of the
sky and the sea, make it veered
towards the blue color of the
environment. In this picture, in
fact we had to manage wisely
the external light, enhancing the
interior light with this some
lamps to light temperature 3500
K, spread in an exaggerated
way to avoid obre yellow and
black that would be displayed on
the shoot.
Love&Coffee

The benefits of breakfast?


Sometimes they are just a nice
picture...
This image made with iPhone,
was born by chance. The color
of the bench was inviting, the
cup perfectly oriented to the
incident external light of the sun,
g e n e r a t e d a n e t s h a d o w,
perfectly delineated. The heart of
cappuccino...
A picture perfect for an
advertisement for a coffee, a
brand of milk, a cup, a bar, or a
way to make Italian breakfast.
I leave you, your personal
motivation for this photo.
Optical view

Using the cameras Arri, you can


understand what it means for a
director of photography, do their
job with love and passion. While
working at times, there are
beautiful details that other
insiders, can not see. An
example is the toothed rings of
the optical unit built into this
camera. While moving the focus
ring, the movements of the same
are infinitesimal, so it is easy to
see fuzzy the reference numbers,
almost like they were in relief.
Using light to the scene
designed for the film set, it is
easy to achieve the right shot
and get a picture like this.
Colors of sun

Look for the right shot is a


synonym for the right time. To
take a picture of sunset (quite
classical, but sought) it took in
this case, about two evenings of
work. Since the twilight until full
sunset, we made a series of
shots every 10 minutes. Each set
of shots, provided for the
different closing the focal length
to reduce the intrusion brighter
than the sun, accentuating all the
colors they caused at that
precise moment. We have
produced about 100 photos
choosing the ones that had the
greatest contrast while
maintaining the best set of colors
(the most balanced). From these
we chose the best: this photo.
Glamour&Cars

The night brings counsel? Yes,


it's true. It 's the case of this
image that we made during the
preparation of a fashion show.
The car advertising was placed
in an area close to the store
window which provided clothes
for the parade. Inside the shop
there all the preparations for the
parade and the window had
been set up ad hoc to be
particularly colorful and rich in
detail. Our client wanted to unite
picture of the car used for the
event and the window, so that
everything was clearly visible and
at the same importance. What
better vision of the inside of a
car? Some play with the focal
length and the image was at
hand.
This first training book, is a first approach to teaching
built with some of the photographs of my personal
collection. Groped the photographic approach
without extensive knowledge of the capabilities of
your camera, it may be a disastrous experience.
I advise readers to do a lot of photographic evidence,
making photographs in a variety of situations and
evaluating the well Exif files resulting from the
software of your camera.
The photographic profession is a very serious and
can not improvise anything in the field, even the most
talented photographers worldwide, have gone
through extensive testing of production to achieve the
final shot that determines the signature of their art.
Try to make your photos, keeping in mind the tips
and techniques that I have included in this initial first
volume. I have not included the operational
requirements, specifically, to leave it to your intuition
and your eye, the final realization of the image that
you want to achieve with your camera.
I thank in advance all those who will find this useful
first book and realize their images included with my
advice here, and I hope that many of you deduce
some of the teachings set forth herein (but not
spelled out), the main reason for which I'm writing
this series training books.
