On view at the 9-11 memorial in Manhattan are renderings of 13 city artists impacted by the apocalyptic event.
Transmuting a Tragedy
Compiled by Parveen Chopra Next month, on September 11, two beams of light will ascend from lower Manhattan into the night sky, marking the 16th anniver-
sary of the attacks on our country. Over the next few weeks, the New York City and the country will also honor those who were
killed, sharing stories of resilience, survival, and response. The National September 11 Memorial & Museum is also hosting the exhibition Rendering the Unthinkable, the works
of 13 NYC artists who were deeply affected by what they witnessed on that fateful day in 2011. Like everyone they too struggled to make sense of the unfathomable destruction
and loss of innocent life they witnessed. Their renderings were selected to be part of the exhibition curated last year.
Gesture
Gesture is an almost 3,000-piece installation consisting of one painting for each person who died as a result of the 9/11 attacks. When installed, the paintings form a
grid of vibrant blocks that subtly shift from red to yellow, white, black, and pink. The installation is by Manju Shandler, a theater designer and mixed-media artist.

info visit www.sos.org. Instead of being bound to the limitations of time and space of this earthly realm,
the soul experiences its unlimited nature as it experiences the bliss and
joy of regions of creation that exist beyond this realm.
The journey begins with our inner awareness or inner eye opening up to see inner
light and hear celestial music. Through further absorption in these, our soul transcends
awareness of the physical body to become aware of the inner realms, such as the astral,
causal, and supracausal regions, until it merges into a region of all spirit, the home of
the Divine. We then discover our soul, which is spirit, is the same essence as the
Creator, which is also spirit. The two merge back into one and we
experience limitless bliss, joy, and divine love.
When we celebrate the outer independence days in our respective countries, whether
it is August 15 in India, or on different dates in different countries, let us also strive to
achieve our spiritual independence. We can do so by meditating on the inner Light and
Sound which will lead our soul to recognize that we are more than the physical body
and intellect. We are soul, a part of the Divine, and our true nature is bliss, joy, and love.
