PRACTICAL: 4 DETERMINATION DIMENSION OF BRICKS

REFERENCE

IS: 2691:1988

AIM

To Perform Dimension test of Bricks

BACKGROUND

In this test 20 bricks are arranged in a straight line touching each other. The diemsion of 20
bricks is mesured and compared with standard size of bricks.

APPARATUS USED:

1. Measuring tape
2. Steel rule
3. Bricks (20 nos.)

PROCEDURE:-

1. The sample of bricks shall first be examined to remove blisters, small projections or
loose particles of clay adhering to the bricks.
2. The bricks are now placed in contact with each other in straight line, using the
appropriate arrangement for length, width and height as required.
3. The overall dimension of the row is measured with the steel measuring tape from end
length, width and height in turn and reading noted to the nearest millimetre.
4. Alternatively, the set can be sub divided in 2 sub sets of 10 and the measurements
added to give the dimension for 20 units.

5. Dimension of each brick is now checked for compliance with the coordinating size by
using callipers or steel rule.
6. The standard dimensions of clay bricks are (190 mm x 90 mm x 90 mm) according to
Indian standard.

CALCULATION

1. The dimensions take as the average of measured values.

2. The variation determine as:

Variation ratio = (Dimension Measured Dimension Standard) x 100 %

Dimension Standard

3. The variations in dimensions are compared with limits specified in specification.

INTERPRETATION OF RESULT

The dimensions of bricks when tested in accordance with clause 6.2.1 shall be within the
following limits per 20 bricks.

1. For modular size

Length 3720 to 3880 mm (3800 80 mm)
Width 1760 to 1840 mm (1800 40 mm)
Height 1760 to 1840 mm (l500 40 mm) (For 90 mm high bricks)
760 to 840 mm (800 40 mm). (For 40 mm high bricks)

2. For non-modular size

Length 4520 to 4680 mm (4600 80 mm)
Width 2240 to 2160mm (2200 40 mm)
Height 1440 to 1360 mm (1400 40 mm) (For 70 mm high bricks)
640 to 560 mm (600 40 mm) (For 30 mm high bricks)
