Short Story

(Graphic Novel Style)

CCSS W.9.3

You are going to write a 2-6 page short story, but heres the catch: your story will be
a blend of written and visual elements. Basically, you are going to create a graphic novel
(more commonly known as a comic strip).

First step: Dont freak out because you think that you are a terrible artists. (No, you
cannot draw stick figures. But trust me, we will have a whole lesson on how to sketch
decent characters. One step at a time.)

Real first step: Write a story. Your story must include:

A vivid setting Dialogue
Engaging characters An insightful theme (not
A clear plot directly stated)
A compelling confict

Your story must also include at least 2 of the following:

Flashback Figurative Language
Foreshadow Suspense
Irony Allusion
Symbolism & Imagery

Second step: Map out the progression of the story and what you plan to include in
each box/panel (image, description, dialogue, etc)

Third step: Create your comic. It should be first sketched in pencil, then outlined in
pen. It should be neat, professional work.
