 HISTORY OF LAZARO FRANCISCO

Lazaro Francisco (February 22, 1898- June 17, 1980) is the fourth child of Eologio Francisco
and Clara Angles. He was born in Orani, Bataan but went and permanently moved in Nueva Ecija.
He was known as the Ama ng Kapatiran ng mga Alagad ng Wikang Pilipino (KAWIKA).
Some of his novels are: Singsing na Pangkasal,Bayang Nagpatiwakal, Sa Paanan ng Krus,
Ilaw sa Hilaga, Binhi at Bunga, Cesar, Sugat ng Alaala, Ama, Maganda Pa Ang Daigdig, and his last
novel, Daluyong. His novels were published under Liwayway except for Bayang Nagpatiwakal. He
was awarded Patnubay ng Lahi by Manila, Dangal ng Lahi by Quezon City and in 1970 he was
granted the Republic Cultural Heritage Award in literature.

CHARACTERS IN THE STORY

LINO- a former banker manor, given the opportunity to own a sambanos ground with the
help of Padre Amando Echevarnia
PADRE AMANDO- proposed to lose the tenancy system. He helped Lino and his child.
MS. LORETO SANCHEZ- neice of Padre Amando. She is the school principal of
Pinyahan. She adopted Ernesto
ERNESTO- Linos illegitimate child
BIDONG- Lino's trustee in his field and boyfriend of Huli
HULI- daughter of Aling Barang and Mang Abeng. Girlfriend of Bidong
DON TITO- One of the greedy landlords opposed to the dissolution of the tenancy system
DR. BENIGNO (BENEG) SITYAR- Don Tito's son running for governor
DIDANG- Lady from Manila that went to Maruhat. Girlfriend of Lino

DALUYONG

The author used daluyong or surge to give the readers an unanswerable questions
in their mind on how the surge coherent with the title of the novel.
The daluyong or the surge shows and symbolizes the life of a person. It never stops,
sometimes I is dangerous but sometimes not, sometimes it is powerful and sometimes
weak.
LAND
It symbolizes the life.
Like life, we need to take care and appreciate it to grow. Our life is a blessing from God
therefore we need to take care of it.
DIPLOMA

It symbolizes a better future.

It shows the importance of education because it can contribute on achieving a better

SUMMARY:
CHAPTER 1 5
Padre Amando gives Lino a part of his agriculture land in one condition, and that is to give Padre
Amando a part of his income in 20 years. Ms. Sanchez treated Ernesto as her own son. Its a
question for Lino why Padre Amando gave him a land and why Ms. Sanchez adopted his son.
Ernesto was dropped by Bidong in his father Lino even if is on weeken basis only. They are carried
through a horse which was given by Padre Amando. Lino went to Hulis house to help the girl on her
agricultural chores because her parents are sick but her parents dont want Bidong for Huli as her
boyfriend. Bidong ask a help to Lino for him to talk to Hulis parent about Bidongs true feeling
towards Huli.
Bidong was truly inloved with Huli. Bidong explained the life of Huli to Lino and Lino discovered that
her parents suffered from their past because of his brother Tirso was married early and didnt do his
obligation on his family.
Padre Amando pleased Don Tito to stop implementing Tenancy System but Don Tito refuse into it.
The father also exposed the fact that the lands are already distributed and it will be payed by
 installment. Don Tito was shocked because he already wanted to buy that land property since
before. Don Tito also discussed that his son will go home soon after his study of medicine in US.

CHAPTER 6 10
Lino confessed his love to Didang since Aling Huwana captured Lino's heart. But Didang rejected
this love because they don't know each other well, it's better to become friends, Didang added. Lino
was invited to Ms. Sanchez birthday and he was planning to bring fruits. Lino and Bidong saw Huli
crying when they visit Aling Barang and they found out that her loving husband has cancer.They had
talked about Huli's brother, Tirso. After that, Lino gave Bidong 50 pesos to start courting Huli. At
night, before going to bed he remembered what Ms. Sanchez told him Hope you get the right
choice." "You're the only one! But I prefer to not choose you.... but other." Then he fell asleep.
CHAPTER 11 15
Bidong said that the soil of their land is rich because of that they can get many harvest. He added
that of they have many harvest, the government wii reach them and will give a label/sign board. Lino
said that after 2-3 years he will build the nipa hut for him and Didang. He will give a nipa hut to
Bidong and Huli. Bidong wished that Lino can be a attorney so that Ms Sanchez will be his lover
because Ms Sanchez is not like any other girls. Lino visited Didang and questiones her if he have
value in Didang. Didang answered that he have value in her but maybe he need to know her past
before that. When Lino went home Didang suddenly get dizzy. Aling Huwana became curious.
Didang said that she broke her promise to herselfe to not love again. She is scaredthat maybe Lino
will lose if he will know her past because she love him.
Saturday morning, Lino went to Pinyahan because it's Ms Sanchez's birthday. Lino went early
because he wants to help for the preparation but Lino just went to rectory to visit Father Amando
because he discovered that Ms Sanchez celebration will be small withhet friends and relatives. He
saw Ligon on the kumbento and told him that he should talk to Father Amando at the celebration
because he looks like he have a problem. Lino got sad but instead of going straight to the
celebration he went to Aling Ambrosia. That time visitors are starting to come on the celebration.
When Lino finally arrived at the celebration, a group of ladies went to an empty room and talked that
Koronel Roda deserves Ms Sanchez than Lino. They also said that if Linoo truly have indulgence to
Ms Sanchez, Aling Basilia and Father Amando he will stay away from her. They planned to show to
Lino that he don't deserve Ms Sanchez, so they just told it to Ligon's wife who is a friend of Lino so it
will not get hurt.
Lino left Ms. Sanchezs birthday for some reasons. Lino formally apologized to Ms. SAnchaez for
leaving and hoping that Father Amando told them the reason, unknowingly Ms. Sanchez and Aling
Basilia were aware of the reason. The reason is Lino left the party because of Ms. Sanchezs frinds.
Albino is a childhood friend of Lino. He approached Lino and told him about Don Titos plan. He
warned Lino to stay still. Huli is washing her clothes near the river when Bidong appeared. Bidong
offered Huli to live at Bidongs property once the contrat ended.
CHAPTER 16 20

After drinking their coffee, Didang continued her story. She told Lino that Chic invited her to be one
of them, to be a hostess. Chic did tell everything that could happen to Didang if she will become a
hostess. She really wanted her to be one of them. And because of that, she adviced Didang on the
things that she should do and should not do if she'll be working in those 3 Nightclubs.Chic said that
 Didang is really beautiful, that she could get many rich customers like Mayors, Congressmen, etc.
And would get many money that she could keep. Didang really wanted to have lots of money, that's
why she decided that she will be working in those 3 Nightclubs of Ric.Didang worked for more than a
year being a hostess in 3 Nightclubs at Dewey Boulevard. She got lots of money that she could buy
all of the things that she ever wanted.

Didang went to Baliwag, her province to visit her mother in cemetery. She also went to their house
so that she could visit her father. But then, she found no one. A neighbor approach her and told that
her father died because of a wound that did not heal. Didang stayed and live with her friend. She
became popular because of her business. She became guest in a contest, sponsor in different
events, etc. But, many of her customers did not pay their debts and some murmur about her.
Because of that, she decided to went back in Manila. Didang visited her old friend Mirang, and live
there for a meantime. Mirang has her child and a chinese husband.They both tell story about
themselves. Mirang helped Didang to find a job in a chinese store. Didang started working in a
chinese store and has a good income.

Didang and Lino heard 3 gun shots. They think that those shots came from Lino's place. Because of
that, he hurriedly rode his horse and went to his house. When he finally arrived, he quickly find
Bidong.Bidong said that those persons who made those gun shots are the ones who are mad at the
both of them.

They talk, and Bidong decided that he will go to Pinyahan because he should deliver the quails that
he have catched. On the other hand, Lino went to Aling Barang to lend the part of their property so
that they could again put their house beside Lino's. He will be glad if they come back because he
wanted to be close to Huli.Aling Barang was thankful to him, even though they are not yet sure if
they will be back, because she must first let her husband know about it. Then, Lino went back to
Bidong and ask to turn the lights off after he leave because he will go to Didang

It was dawn when Lino and Didang went to the nipa house and they had the conversation on what
happen to Didang's trip on manila and other stuff.
CHAPTER 21- 25

Benigno Sityar commanded Bidong to kill Lino because of the land that Amando gave. At first,
Benigno convinced Lino to to become a bodyguard but Lino says no and recommend Bidong to this
decision. That was the time when Benigno campaigns for the position of governor in their place.

Before Salina, Mina and Beba leave the house of Ms. Sanchez, they decided to go at Babo at night
and also at Gabriel Manalastas of Maruhat. Ms.Sanchez went to the relative of Manansala together
with Ignacio. Ms.Sanchez notice Huli because she looks perfect. Ms.Sanchez talk to Huli and give
an envelope and ask if they could visit Pinyahan. Huli said at Ms. Sanchez that Lino pay all the
expenses for them .Ms.Sanchez also ask where Bidong is, Huli said that she didnt see Bidong
cause his afraid at Huli's mother. Huli added that Bidong rejects to become a bodyguard of Benigno
and he wants to have his own business. Basilia disappointed at Lino because Basilia heard about
Linos concerned in the family of Huli while his Son Ernesto he didnt visit. Ms. Sanchez wants to
 send Ernesto at Manila to continue his College and also because Ernesto has resentment to his
father Lino. Ms.Sanchez remember that August 19 Ernesto will perform a speech and She thinks if
she will take a letter of invitation to Lino and if He will go to watch his Son Ernesto.Benog said to
Bidong if he will do everything He will give a key which He can have a things He wants and the Key
is from America and once He have it, he will have Everything he Wants like a Lamp of Aladdin, But
Bidong Confused about the Key and Benog said The key is like a money because money can buy
everything in this world .Bidong ask Benog what he wanted to do and Benog whispered and give
Bidong 24 hours to think. Luisito came a brain trust with a 5 man at the office of Benog. Benog tells
them that He gave Bidong 24 hours to think and to be with them and tell to luisito to prepare a plan.
CHAPTER 26-31
Lino is confused either to go with Ms. Sanchezs invitation for Ernestos event or to go with Didang.
But he chose to look for Bidong, he asked Albino if he saw Bidong but Albino told him that Bidong
escaped unknowingly it was Don Titos plan. He searched for Bidong all day and he found three
strangers left Bidongs dead body.
Lino told Padre Amando what happened to Bidong and he told him about his suspicions. The
servant of church said that they do not agree on what Bidong had done but they feel amazed. The
corpse of Bidong was mourned the whole day at the church and buried him at four oclock. Father
Amando warned Lino not to take revenge for Bidong.
Lino visited Miss Sanchez to personally show his condolence and sympathy. Miss Sanchez is
sulking to Lino because he did not take his promises. All of a sudden Lino remember his
conversation with Didang.
Bullets fill the air of Linos farm. The thieves were arrested including Lino to have his statement. Huli
and Aling Barang went to Linos hut to bring his stuffs coming from Miss Sanchez. Lino confesses to
Huli Bidongs last words for her. After one week, Lino went to Didang but he did not meet anyone for
Didang already left the province because Lino did not show himself.
Lino search for Didang but he failed to find her. Padre Amando asked for help to find Lino and
Attorney Ligon found Lino at Ceramics factory in Grace Park, Caloocan. Attorney Ligon told Lino to
go back to Piahan because Miss Sanchez was very ill. Lino hurriedly went to Piahan and the time
he arrived at the place, he confesses his feelings for Miss Sanchez. Lino begged to Miss Sanchez to
hold on and get well soon but Miss Sanchez was already in critical condition and with her last
breath, she ask for his forgiveness and thanked him for everything he done for her. Lino thanked him
also. In the end, Ms. Sanchez didnt make her promise to Lino. Little by little she can feel her body
giving up until Lino found it out. Ms. Sanchez died.
