SKIN AGING

Skin Firmness, Elasticity, and Moisture-holding

Major Skin Molecules: Collagen, Elastin, GAGs and Proteoglycans

Collage: With age collagen begins to deteriorate and causes the skin to become thinner
and sag.

Elastin: stretchable protein permit the skin to stretch, then regain its original shape with
age, the skin's elastin breaks down and causes wrinkles

GAGs have high water-holding properties (true skin moisturizer) cosmetic moisturizers
cover the skin with a water impermeable barrier such as petrolatum

Proteoglycans. Hydrophilic molecules able to form porous hydrated gels. Provide

mechanical support to tissues.

Collagen and Elastin in Cosmetics Have No Effect on Skin

Neither collagen nor elastin present in the cosmetics is able to penetrate the skin. Sometimes fragments, or
digests, of these molecules are used, but these fragments also cannot penetrate the skin.

Aging and Sun Damaged Skin

-slower turn over (slower cell replacement of skin surface)

-the skin become more thin

-collagen coils and elastin fibers suffer more cuts and cross linking damage, skin loose
elasticity

- proteoglycan and GAGs decrease skin become more dry and looser

-NO of blood vessels decrease leading to lose youthful color and glow

-gravity pulls the skin causing it to sag

***Antioxidants are natures defense against the
damaging effects of free radicals, guarding cellular
structures and DNA against aging free radicals.

**Free radicals are unstable, highly reactive

molecules that damage the skin, leading to side effects
associated with skin aging, such as lines and wrinkles,
dullness and sagging.

****Treatments for photo aged skin

(antioxidants, -hydroxy acids & Retinoid (vitamin A
metabolites and analogs)

SOME ANTIAGING ACTIVE INGREDIENTS

AI ANTIAGING FUNCTION
Vitamin A (retinol) Antioxidant to inhibit lipid peroxidation ,
stimulate collagen synthesis ,
Repair photo damage by restorative mechanism .
It also works to stimulate skin renewal and improve appearance of the
skin.
Alpha hydroxyl acids (lactic Increase epidermal desquamation
, glycolic& malic)AHA Stimulate production of collagen , improve fine lines and wrinkles
Increase the prescence of hyalurinic acid in dermis
Vitamin C Membrane antioxidant
Stimulate collagen synthesis
Regenerate vit E
Improver hyperpigmentation
Formation of barrier lipid
Vitamin E (tocopherol) Membrane antioxidant
Provide photo protection in combination with vitamin C
