Mall reno ‘cranks up density’

Mayor Watts says the city’s plans for the site are
what local merchants have been wanting for years

Guarded excitement mixed with
concerns about parking and the lack
of rental housing greeted the City of
Surrey’s latest update on its plans to
redevelop the Cloverdale Mall site.
The former “Safeway” mall – long
considered an eyesore – is at the cen-
tre of the city’s long-range plans for
Cloverdale Town Centre, mayor Di-
anne Watts told downtown business
owners last week.
The city acquired the eight-acre
parcel in 2007 with the intent of rede-
veloping the site, bordered by 57 and
58 Avenue between 176 Street and the
bypass, as part of revitalization efforts
in the historic town centre.
“It’s certainly very exciting,” Clo-
verdale Business Improvement As-
sociation president Lyle MacMillan
said, calling the city’s plans for the site
“long overdue”.
The five-stage proposal, part of
a master plan developed last year,
would see the nearly vacant mall and
its expansive outdoor parking lot
transformed into a urban village with
shops, townhomes and public spaces.
Big anchor stores – like the former
Safeway that originally anchored the
mall – aren’t part of the plan.
“The purpose here is to have an ur-
ban town centre,” Watts said. “When
we start putting another anchor ten-
ant with acres of parking, it just takes
away from everything that we want to
do.”
Once complete, the redevelopment
could be home to between 800 and
1,000 new downtown residents living
in a variety of higher density housing
– some on top of commercial, in stand
alone units or townhouses, some 360
to 400 units in all.
“I know the merchants down on
Main Street, year after year, after year
– I mean the 20 years I’ve lived in Clo-
verdale – they’ve always said we need

A family of five made it out alive after
fire ripped through their home in Clayton
late last week.
Everyone was asleep when fire broke out
in the Campbell family’s back yard July 8,
long after everyone had gone to bed.
Moira Campbell, who was asleep in the
basement, awoke at around 11:30 p.m. to
see a bright blazing fireball outside her
window.
She doesn’t know what work her up. She
only knows the home’s smoke detectors
weren’t ringing, possibly because there
was no smoke inside yet, even as massive
flames shot up the two-storey home’s back

The sweltering Okanagan heat didn’t faze Clover-
dale’s Squirt C girl’s fastball team at the provincials
in Vernon last Sunday.
The Cloverdale Tsunami delivered an exciting
18-3 victory over the Sardis Slammers during the
July 11 final at Grahame Park in the Okanagan city.
It was an impressive performance for the team.
“The on-field action was outstanding and had ev-
eryone on the edge of their lawn chairs,” said Jodi
Rolke, vice-president of the Vernon Minor Fastball
Association.
“Right from the first ball, these young women
demonstrated that they are top junior athletes,” Rolke
added. “And given that they had to endure sweltering
temperatures, their skills are even more impressive.”

TRUTH: Battery cages are where the vast majority

of egg-laying hens are confined, with roughly 67
square inches to live their entire life. These hens are not
only abused, they suffer from the denial of nesting,
perching, and dustbathing. Cage-free hens are
spared several of these cruelties but are far from
“cruelty-free”. Typically, male chicks are killed upon
hatching and hens have their beaks burned off and are
slaughtered at less than two years old. These hens are
often dehydrated and starved by producers in an
attempt to force the bird to molt.
