Evaluating the effectiveness of academic admissions policy of Malayan Colleges Laguna using

correlation data of college grade average with admission examination scores and high
school grade average
Dodjie Maestrecampo

ABSTRACT
The correlation of admission examination scores and high school grade average with the first-year
college grade weighted average was used to review the academic admission policy of Malayan
Colleges Laguna (MCL).
Logistic regression was used to predict the first year college grade weighted average (GWA) using
MCL Admission Examination scores (MCLAE), 4th year high school grade average (HSGA), and
combined MCLAE and HSGA. A combined sample of 2-year freshmen cohorts (SY 2010 -2011 and
SY 2011-2012) with a total of 1,889 freshmen profiles were used to draw the correlation. Results
showed 4th year high school grade average (HSGA) prediction of first-year college grade weighted
average (GWA) is more accurate than those based on MCL Admission Examination (MCLAE) scores.
However, prediction based on combined HSGA and MCLAE scores were more accurate than those
based on HSGA and MCLAE alone.
The results suggest that the MCLAE passing mark needs to be adjusted and evaluated together with
HSGA to improve the prediction of first-year college success rates.
