Response to Question One

Globally, many educational institutions are experiencing drastic change in diversity and
population. Notable is that, a significant portion of the population comes from low-income
families. Therefore, having worked with different leaders in the field of education, I have been
able to develop several core values that guide me in the delivery of my duties as an emerging
school leader. The three core leadership values that I uphold include:
Trust building
As stated in, Sickles, Owen and Whitaker, chapter 20, p 144: clarify your core, a good
principal needs to build relationship, creating the need to build trust. It is worth noting that 90%
of all the instructors in the learning institutions are of white origin, with many of them having
attended middle level schools, and white colleges and universities that are predominantly English
speaking. Therefore, due to nature of their life and educational background, they have little
connection to the current diverse school community. Through trust, we are able to build a
connection with current school community.
Engagement with Personal Culture
In Sickles, Owen and Whitaker, chapter 20, p 140: clarify your core, in order to handle
change in any educational institution, change has to begin from the educators themselves before
any significant change is noted amongst the students. This is an emphasis on the core aim of this
value. The educators need to develop a strong and decisive cultural competence that promotes
effective relations and authenticity in the school environment, irrespective of the diversity.
Confronting Diversity Acceptance and Social Justice
Sickles, Owen and Whitaker, chapter 20, p 140: clarify your core, the authors put
emphasis on the need for principals to establish a conducive environment for all accepting
diversity and equal opportunity. With the current trend in education institutions being social
acceptance, one of my core values is based on acceptance and justice among the educators and
students. The value provides the narrative that goes a long way in creating equal opportunities to
all individuals within the school environment.
All school leaders and the institutional communities at large should be able to actively
engage in the conversation pertaining to diversity in both social and economic aspects. Based on
core values as explicated in this analysis, my leadership will be focused on providing a suitable
educational environment for both the educators and the students.

Response to Question Two

The core traits of any social grouping, for instance, a learning institution, are based on the
sharing of the cultural tradition that is transmitted down the generation chain. It is through these
cultural traditions that the re-enforcement of the groups affirmations is transferred (Sergiovanni
350). In order for change to be effective, there are three dominant steps. The process of change
is normally hastened by the primary step of goal setting. It is further christened by the crafting of
change targets. The second step is depicted by the change protocol, whereas the final stage
involves supervision and staff development.
In Sergiovannis: The Principalship p 350, the figure 15.2 gives a disruptive way of how
change is established within a particular institution. The individual at the center represents a
person who is in charge of major activities of the institution. The triangle that is immediate to the
individual depicts the intrinsic attributes that affect the persons propensity towards change.
These aspects include cultural influences, institutional and environmental factors, as depicted in
the figure. It is notable that moving away from such intrinsic values is instigated by the search
for deficits, which is prompted by the propensity to seek strengths, growth and potential.
In the figure 15.2, the inner circle is a representation of the extrinsic influences on the
individual towards achievement of change. These can be categorized into three broad aspects;
social, economic and political. In a philosophical outplay, there is an environment that outlays
multiple views of realities and perspectives that are ungoverned by the universal laws and peer
influences. In order to gain the ability to maintain stability within the society, one has to establish
a balance between the individual and the extrinsic values (Sergiovanni 352). Once a suitable
balance has been achieved, one is able to successfully implement change.
The outermost circle is a basic integration of both the intrinsic and the extrinsic values
that affect development. It is within this circle where a balance is achieved between the two sets
of values and a proper deployment of change is achieved. Once a balance is achieved, the final
step of achieving change is initiated.
