L2 vs L3 Switching
L2 Switching = Based on MAC Address only.
The only frames destined for the switchs local MAC
addresses are L2 Management frames.
CDP

DTP, Etc.

L3 Switching = Based on L2 and L3 headers.

Switch contains L3 Routing Processor
Frames can be received, destined for MAC of RP

What is a Multilayer Switch?
Multilayer Switch = Switching decisions made by
inspecting more than a single OSI Layer.
Many Multilayer switches can parse into the
TCP/UDP header.
A switch does NOT need routing capability to

Bound to Layer-2 VLAN
A Multilayer Switch must have at least one SVI to perform
IP routing. IGP Routing Protocol
