The Taxi Maximum Fares (Children and Elderly) Regulations


(Northern Ireland) 2017

Made 21st August 2017

Coming into operation 1st October 2017

The Department for Infrastructure(a) makes the following Regulations in exercise of the powers
conferred by section 16(1) of the Taxis Act (Northern Ireland) 2008(b) and now vested in it(c).

In accordance with section 16(3) of that Act, the Department has taken into consideration the
recommendations of the General Consumer Council for Northern Ireland.

Citation and commencement


1. These Regulations may be cited as the Taxi Maximum Fares (Children and Elderly) Regulations
(Northern Ireland) 2017 and shall come into force on 1st October 2017.

Interpretation
2. In these Regulations, the terms driver, fare, and taxi have the same meaning as in the Taxis
Act (Northern Ireland) 2008.

Fares
3.(1) A driver of a taxi must not charge, for any single journey, a fare that is greater than 14.80
for a passenger who
(a) has not yet reached the day of their sixteenth birthday, or
(b) has reached the day of their sixty-fifth birthday.
(2) The driver of the taxi may require the passenger to provide proof of age, such as
(a) a valid licence issued under Part II of the Road Traffic (Northern Ireland) Order 1981(d)
or Part III of the Road Traffic Act 1972(e);

(a) Formerly the Department for Regional Development; see section 1(6) and (11) of, and Schedule 1 to, the
Departments Act (Northern Ireland) 2016 (c. 5 (N.I.)); pursuant to section 1(9), the Department of the
Environment is dissolved.
(b) 2008 c. 4 (N.I.).
(c) See Article 8(1)(b) of, and Part 2 of Schedule 5 to, the Departments (Transfer of Functions) Order
(Northern Ireland) 2016 (S.R. 2016 No. 76).
(d) S.I. 1981/154 (N.I. 1).

(b) a valid United Kingdom passport, within the meaning of the Immigration Act 1971(a);
(c) a valid Proof of Age Standards Scheme card;
(d) an other government-issued identification card which displays the holder's date of birth.
(3) Subsection (1) does not apply if
(a) when requested to under subsection (2), the passenger is unable, or refuses, to provide
proof of age, or
(b) where more than a single passenger is to be carried, one or more of the passengers does
not fall within subsection (1)(a) or (b).
