Requirements for beam webs under compression due to concentrated loads.

When provisions are exceeded , the webs of the beams should be reinforced or the length of bearing increased.

Properties (AISC ASD Sec

Beam:

Fy = 355 MPa

H= 1200 mm
tw= 20 mm
B= 500 mm
tf = 40 mm
w= 13 mm

Column:

Fy = 355 MPa

H= 500 mm
tw= 20 mm
B= 500 mm
tf = 25 mm

Plate between Column and Beam:

Plate thickness:
a2 = 25 mm

Load:
Length of concentrated Load: N= 500.0 mm

The maximum axial load for 500x500 Column is: 2,652.0 kN

Attached to a 1200X500X20X40 beam.

Web Yielding
For 1200X500X20X40 beam:
The contact reaction is: P = 780.0 kN for a web thickness of 20 mm
Distance from the outer face of the flange to web toe: k= 38 mm

R = [( N + 2.5 k )Fy tw]/1.5 R= 2816.33 kN > 780.0 kN OK

Web Crippling
For 1200X500X20X40 beam:
When the concentrated load is applied at a distance less than H/2 from the end of the member:
R <= 1395.08 kN > P => OK
