Module 3 Outline

Description: Qatar is currently experiencing a huge leap in construction industry from being mostly
desert to a progressive and booming economy. High-rise buildings are currently being built and major
infrastructure projects are on their way to completion prior to the World Cup 2022. While engineers
work based on certain sets of standards, in Qatar however, consultants and contractors alike are more
inclined in the use of British Codes (if not Eurocode which has been recently implemented to replace the
BS codes). We Filipino engineers, on the other hand, are more familiar with the American Codes since
our very own NSCP adopted the provisions from some of the following codes, namely, ACI, ASCE and
ASTM to name a few. Hence, as professionals, it is prudent that we also study the norms being used
where we are currently working as Civil Engineers.

This module is aimed at providing Civil Engineers the necessary guidelines to supplement the knowledge
gained while working in the Middle East. Projects normally begin with concept design and will be
implemented upon acceptance of the detailed design. In this regard, the module will be divided into
parts. The first part will focus on the design aspects while the second part will focus on the detailing.

Part 1 Reinforced Concrete Design Rules of Thumb BS Codes

A. Materials
1. Concrete (grade, mix proportions, etc)
2. Reinforcements
B. Dimensioning
1. Concrete cover requirements
2. Span/depth ratios
3. Preliminary Sizing
C. Design
1. Partial safety factors for ULS
2. Calculation of ultimate moment capacity
3. Calculation of required tension reinforcements
4. Calculation of shear capacity
5. Calculation of shear reinforcements
6. Worked example (beams, slabs, columns, foundation)

Part 2 Reinforce Concrete Detailing Rules of Thumb

A. Minimum and maximum steel ratio percentages

B. Typical calculation of bond lengths (anchorage)
C. Minimum bending radius
D. Shape codes
E. Typical reinforcement quantities on different structural elements (estimate)
F. Worked examples (standard details of beams, slabs, columns and foundations)
