successfulbusinessman,whoremindsthemofabettheyhadundertaken10yearsago.The
trio,whilerecollectinghilariousantics,includingtheirruninswiththeDeanofDelhis
ImperialCollegeofEngineering,ViruSahastrabudhe,racetolocateRancho,athislast
knownaddresslittleknowingthesecretthatwaskeptfromthemallthistime.

FarhanQureshi(R.Madhavan),RajuRastogi(SharmanJoshi)andRanchoddasShamaldas
ChanchadRancho(AamirKhan)arethreeengineeringstudentswhosharearoominthe
residenceofImperialCollegeofEngineering(ICE).Farhanisstudyingengineeringto
pursuehisfatherswishesoverhisownwishtobecomeawildlifephotographer.Rajuis
studyingtoraisehisfamilysfortunesandgetthemoutofpoverty.Ontheotherhand,
Ranchostudiesforhissimplepassioninmachinesanddevices.Ranchobelievesthat
successinstudyingisnotachievedbysolelymemorizingdefinitionsgivenbytextbooksor
professors,butbyunderstandingandapplyingtheconcepts.Hebelievesthatoneshould
followexcellence,notsuccess,assuccesswillcomeitselfifexcellenceisfollowed.
ThingsfurtherescalatewhenthethreefriendsdrunkenlybreakintoVirusshouseone
nighttoallowRanchotoconfesshislovetoPia,andurinateonthefrontdoorbeforefleeing.
Thenextday,VirusthreatenstorusticateRajuunlesshesquealsonRancho.Notwanting
tobetrayhisfriendorletdownhisfamily,Rajuattemptssuicideandendsupparalyzed.
Followinghisrecovery,Rajudiscardshisfearofthefuture.EncouragedbyRancho,both
RajuandFarhangaincouragetodowhattheywereafraidtodobefore.Rajutakesafrank
approachinaninterviewforacorporatejob,whileFarhanconvinceshisparentstoallow
himtopursuehisloveofwildlifephotography,bothsuccessfulintheirendeavors.

Theirstoryisframedasintermittentflashbacksfromthepresentday,tenyearsafter
ChaturbetthathedbecomemoresuccessfulthanRancho.Havinglostcontactwith
Rancho,whodisappearedduringthegraduationpartyandwentintoseclusion,afterfive
years,RajuandFarhanbeginajourneytofindhim.TheyarejoinedbyChatur,nowa
wealthyandsuccessfulprofessionalintheUSA,whoislookingtosealadealwithafamous
scientistandprospectivebusinessassociatenamedPhunsukhWangdu.Whentheyfind
RanchoshouseinShimla,theyfindacompletelydifferentman:therealRancho(Jaaved
Jaffrey).
Fromhim,theycometoknowthattheirfriendwasadestituteservantboyChhotewho
lovedlearning,whilehe,therealRancho,dislikedstudy.Afterseeingtheboysintelligence,
thefamilyagreedtolettheservantboystudyinRanchosplaceinsteadoflaboring.In
return,therealRanchowouldpockethisqualificationsandaftergraduating,theservant
boywillceaseallcontact.TherealRanchorevealsthatChhoteisnowaschoolteacher

friend,Ranchoddas"Rancho"Chanchad(AamirKhan)isahighlytalentedandeccentricinventor.
Aftergivingunorthodoxanswersinclass,Ranchocomesintoconflictwiththecollege'sdirector,Viru
Sahastrabuddhe,knownas"Virus",whosetraditionalandstrictphilosophiesoneducationcontrast
sharplywithRancho'scarefreeloveoflearning.
RanchoquicklyfallsinlovewithPia,Virus'youngerdaughter,amedicalstudent,andalwaysscores
thehighestmarksoutofhisclass,muchtothedismayofVirus.Healsoattractstheattentionof
ChaturRamalingam,anarrogantUgandanbornTamilstudentknownas"Silencer"duetohis
abilitiesinrotelearningandprocrastination.Onenight,thethreefriendsdrunkenlybreakintothe
SahastrabuddhehouseholdtoallowRanchotoprofesshislovetoPia.Afterdiscoveringtheirantics,
VirusthreatenstoexpelRajuunlesshewritesaletterimplicatingRanchointhebreakin.Unwilling
tobetrayRanchoordisappointhisfamily,Rajuunsuccessfullyattemptssuicidebyjumping.With
intensivecareandsupportfromhisfriends,Rajurecoversintimeforacorporatejobinterview.
Meanwhile,RanchoandPiapostFarhan'slettertohisfavoritephotographer,whooffershima
positionasassistant.Farhanstillfearshisfather'srejection,butafterurgingfromRancho,he

FrustratedbyRancho'sinfluenceonRajuandFarhan,Virusmakesthefinalexamssodifficultthat

papers,butVirusdiscoversthetrioandexpelsthem.However,whenVirus'pregnantelderdaughter
Monagoesintolabourduringaheavystormthatcutsoffallpowerandtraffic,Ranchouseshis

gratefulVirusfinallyacknowledgesRanchoasanextraordinarystudent,allowingthethreeto

ArrivingatShimla,theymeetamanwhoturnsouttobetherealRanchoddasChanchad.Fromhim,
theylearnthattheRanchotheyknewwasactually"Chhote",anorphanedservanttotheChanchad
family.Ranchodas'fatherarrangedforChhotetoattendICEinhisson'sname,sothathissoncould
takecreditforthedegree.RanchodasprovidesChhote'saddressinLadakh,whereheisaschool
teacher.Ontheway,inManali,theyalsorescuePiafromherarrangedweddingsothatshecan
marryRancho.
