Title of post: Travel Outreach Officer

Job location: Based in Bristol. Working locations will include Bristol, South Gloucestershire,
North Somerset, Bath and North East Somerset
Wage: 9.50 per hour
Hours: Two positions available, minimum 12 hours per week (more available)
Typical work hours: between 8am and 8pm (3 -6 hour shifts). Some evening and weekend
work will be required.
Employment start date: Immediate start
Purpose
The West of England Partnership Unitary Authorities (UAs) (South Gloucestershire, Bristol,
Bath and North Somerset) has commissioned Steer Davies Gleave to manage a Sustainable
Travel Team in the four UAs. This work is part of the TravelWest programme and has been
integral to the West of Englands sustainable transport offer since 2011.
Travel Outreach Officers will be part of a skilled team who will be engaging with the public and
encouraging people to travel in a more sustainable way.

Core Work Areas


Travel Outreach Officers will be required to work with minimum inputs in various locations
across the four UAs, actively managing the promotion of using sustainable transport at
workplaces, events, schools, in communities and residential settings. The Sustainable Travel
Team are based within the clients premises at Bristol City Council therefore a professional
approach to client relationships is necessary.

Outreach
Champion and actively manage and promote the delivery of sustainable travel initiatives
in a variety of mediums to the public (with limited managerial inputs);
Work in a variety of environments such as businesses, schools, residential and community
areas and adapt delivery style accordingly, yet achieve stated goals;

Planning
Formulate, setup, deliver and independently manage high profile travel roadshow events
(including presentations);

Admin
Manage risk assessments;
Gather customer requirements for key offers such as cycle training, bus tickets and
personal journey plans;
Accurately record customer data, including services requested and conversation details;
and

Support office staff with ad-hoc administrative tasks and promotional work as required by
the Team Manager and Project Manager.

Support
Carry out in-depth personalised travel planning where appropriate, by appointment; and
Provide additional intensive engagement support to key sites at clients request (this will
require working in residential settings and site offices).

Essential Criteria:
An interest in sustainable or active travel modes; walking, cycling and public transport;
Ability to work effectively as part of a team;
Excellent presentation skills;
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills a well-rounded people person;
A friendly and approachable manner, and good verbal communication skills including the
ability to listen;
Happy to work outdoors and be mobile in all weather conditions;
Excellent organisation skills with an ability to manage own time and prioritise tasks;
A passion for helping people and improving the local environment and community;
Full drivers license and willingness to drive pool vehicle;
Ability to work on own initiative, and as part of a team; and
A flexible approach to working hours and tasks.

Desirable criteria:
Knowledge of the local area and an interest in helping individuals or groups; and
Confident cyclist and willingness to ride event trike.
