The roles of teachers and students in some early English textbooks in India: An

evaluative study

There are not many textbooks which explicitly talk about the roles of its primary users;
students and teachers. However, it can be conjectured from the nature of materials whether
students are expected to memorise the rules or discover it, participate actively or passively in
learning activities, relate or do not relate materials to their own experience and personal lives
and undertake varieties of tasks which prepare them to face real life language needs. Further,
it can be hypothesised from the materials how far the textbooks recognize some unique
functions of teachers roles such as guiding, monitoring, explaining difficulties, lecturing etc.
The present paper makes an attempt to find out students and teachers roles in some early
English textbooks through analysing topics, language use and exercises.
