The German Academic Exchange Service or Deutscher Akademischer Austausch

Dienst (DAAD) is a publicly-funded independent organisation of higher education
institutions in Germany. The purpose of this organisation is to promote academic cooperation
worldwide, primarily the exchange of students, academics, and scientists. Since several
decades, DAAD supports academic exchange between Germany and Indonesia by
scholarship and fellowship as well as to help establish cooperation between universities.

One of the DAAD scholarship is study visit and seminar for foreign students as a
team. This programme provides opportunity for foreign students to conduct study visit,
seminar, and workshop in Germany, as well as explore Germany universities generally. The
programme is very useful for students to expand knowledges and obtain experiences
internationally. I have many experiences and knowledge to learn more tourism, heritage, and
development by the programme.

According to the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index 2013, Germany position
is in the second on the top of the list over the world. Because of many tourism organisations
in Germany, in each level, that are responsible for all issues and related to tourism, so the
index is unquestionable. The tourism organisations are as followsThe Federal
Governments Commisioner for Tourism, The Tourism Committee, The Tourism Consultant
Council, The German National Tourist Board, The German Tourism Association, The
Federal Association of the German Tourism Industry, The German Travel Association, and
The German Hotel and Restaurant Association, etc. Not only many organisations, but
Germany also invest in the improvement of education and training in tourism in order to
deliver well-educated human resources. Germany also ponders as necessary the
correspondence between the training paths and tourism strategic challenges. Therefore,
Germany could be an example to another country for developing the tourism industry.

Indonesia is in the seventieth of the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index 2013.
Indonesia has many potential in tourism industry. Hence, Jakarta as the capital city of
Indonesia becomes the centre of Indonesias tourism industry, but travel and tourism
regulatory framework as well as business environment and infrastructure are not supported.
According to the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index 2013, there are three pillars
which become Indonesian weakness as followstourism infrastructure (score 2.1 of 7), ICT
infrastructure (score 2.7 of 7), and health and hygiene (score 2.9 of 7). The three pillars have
to get more attention because Tourism Ministry of the Republic of Indonesia have to achieve
the thirtieth of the the top of the list over the world in 2019.

One of the heritage site in Germany that I visited is Wartburg Castle in Eisenach,
Thuringia, Germany. The culture and tradition in Eisenach is firmly linked to Luther and
Bach, with the work of Elizabeth of Hungary, Telemann, Goethe, Wagner, and Liszt. From
where I stand, Wartburg Castle is a truly ideal castle. It blends superbly into its forest
surroundings. Although it has retained some original sections from the feudal period, the
form it acquired during the 19th-century reconstitution gives a good idea of what this fortress
might have been at the height of its military and seigneurial power. It was during his exile at
Wartburg Castle that Martin Luther translated the New Testament into German.
Yeah . . . that is too cold to visit Wartburg Castle in November, the temperature was between
6C and 12C. Too cold for Indonesian. I visited the castle on Friday, November 13th, 2015,
when the castle staffs were preparing the celebration of Christmas. The castle is not only for
sightseeing experience, but also for pre wedding photoshoot. I will do that sometime soon
I was there at 12:00 p.m. until 03:00 p.m. Guided tour in English at 01:30 p.m.
Taking some photos there is a must.
