Mark Idan, 36, is accused of entering the Iranian embassy in Nicosia, Cyprus, in June 1998, slipping a note to an official saying, "I have served in the Israeli army,” and offering to help Iran. According to the indictment, the Iranians rejected the offer. Atthe prosecution's request, the Tel Aviv district court ruled Sunday that Idan must remain in custody ‘until the completion of proceedings against him, his lawyer,Guy Flanter, said. Planter said he would have asked for Idan to be placed under house arrest, but could not do so because the accused does not have a home in Israel now. Idan has lived abroad since his visit to Cyprus. He was arrested when he returned to Israel in October. Under interrogation, he confessed to the charge, the indictment said. Conviction on a charge of attempting to establish contact with a foreign agent carries a maximum sentence of 15 years. The trial is to begin on Monday. Idan came to Israel in 1987 on a visit and settled in Kibbutz Kfar Masaryk, a communal farm village. Although he is not Jewish, he was granted immigrant status in 1990, because he had married an Israeli woman, In 1991, he was enlisted in the Israeli army for a short period of compulsory service. Later he did some service in the reserves, the indictment said. He went to Cyprus to arrange his divorce from the Israeli woman, Flanter said.
