Loves animal(stand at right side)

This was shown when Richard deliberately raised his gun a little bit higher to
miss shooting a buck because he thought that hunting was not important.
Richard could not kill animals. Gus, Richards elder brother, was upset with
Richard because Richard purposely misfired. Richards father, Pa, was also
disappointed with Richard. Pa asked Richard why he purposely missed shooting
the buck. Richard told Pa that he had no right to kill it. Richard told Pa that he felt
painful and sad to kill an animal. Pa told Richard not to go hunting anymore if he
did not like it.
For me, I disliked killing animal. All living things on the planet have their own life,
we do not have any qualification to kill them. Richard knight was doing the things
and I respected him.
Kind (stand at right side)(friendship)
His kindness was evident when Mrs. Hansen asked her class to sign a card for
the Schermers as someone vandalised the tavern owned by Hannahs parents.
They painted Dirty Huns all over the walls. Mrs Hansen brought a card to
express regret for what had happened. The troublemakers like Abner, Harry,
Blanche and Peggy refused to sign the card and warned other classmates not to
sign the card. However, Richard was the only student who signed the sympathy
card for Hannah Schermer. After school, Richard took the card from Mrs Hansen.
And give the card to Hannah. Hannah accepted the card reluctantly. Later,
Hannah apologised to Richard for being rude. This was the beginning of their
friendship.
Everyone here should be treated equally. We ought to follow Richard Knight
good treat and learned how to respect others.

Responsibility

Responsibility is a virtue. His responsibility is portrayed when he works hard to

get an excellent results in school. Besides, he helps his sister at home and also
helps his father on farm because this was his responsibility as a student, a
brother and a son.
Happy ending / Brave / One should follow his dream

Richard Knight had a secret. Nobody knew that he wrote poetry including
his family, teachers and schoolmates. Richard learnt about Mr Kilmer
when Richards English teacher, Mrs Hansen read a poem to the class. The title
of the poem was Trees by Joyce Kilmer who was a famous poet and an army.
Then, Richard wrote a letter to Mr Kilmer. In his letter, Richard told Mr Kilmer that
he loved to write poems. He also asked for Mr Kilmers advice whether he should
tell his secret to everybody. A few days later, Richard received a letter from Mr
Kilmer. Mr Kilmer advised Richard to overcome his fear and share his poetry with
people around him. He gathered his courage to share his poems with his family
but nobody was interested. Pa did not believe that Richard writing poems, Gus
thought person who writing poem was sissy. Richard felt upset.

The next day, Richard told Mrs Hansen that he wrote poetry. He showed
her Mr Kilmers letter and let Mrs Hansen helped him to choose a poem to send
to Mr Kilmer. As advised by Mrs Hansen, Richard became brave enough to share
Mr Kilmers latest letter and his poem with the class. Some of his classmates,
including Blanche and Peggy, were deeply moved by his poem. They started to
respect Richard while Hannah suggested a different ending to Richards poem.

Richard received a bad news about Mr Kilmer as Mr Kilmer was killed in

the war. Richard wrote a poem as a tribute to Mr Kilmer. In the poem, Richard
likened Mr Kilmer to the world. The tribute was printed in the local newspaper,
The Turtle Lake Weekly. Richard was afraid that his father was going to be
angry at him when his father read the poem because his father did not like him
writing poems. After reading the poem, his father told him a story about his uncle,
Roland. Roland was killed in a war in Cuba. His father regarded Roland as his
world. Hence, his father was amazed how Richard could use the same word in
his tribute.
Richard continued writing poems about farm life for the local newspaper.
He got his fathers help as he was an experienced farmer. Every night, Richard
read his poems aloud and his father would correct or give suggestions to improve
the poems. His father finally supported Richards passion in writing poetry.

In a nutshell, Richard faced many obstacles in his journey of becoming a

poet. In the end, he managed to realise his dream.
Friendship
Supportive. (stand at right side)
Mrs. Hansen asked the class to write an essay as one of the activities for a
patriotic programme which helped sell Liberty bonds. Hannah and Richard won
the roles of Lady Liberty and the Doughboy respectively because they wrote the
best essays. Many students were angry when Hannah won the role. They
regarded Hannah as an unpatriotic German although she was an American
citizen. Hannah told Richard that her essay started a little war in Turtle lake. She
did not want to cause any more problems. So she declined the role of Lady
Liberty. As a friend, Richard Knight stood by her and supported her. To show his
support, he too, declined the role as a Doughboy, sacrificed his favorite role. This
clearly shown that he was a true and supportive friend. A true friend was rare to
meet.
A friend understood us well. Sometimes he understood us better than our family
does.
Hannah understood that Richard loves poetry. She gives him idea when Richard
reads out a poem in class.
Hannah understood his relationship with Mr. Kilmer. She felt sad when she broke
the news of Mr. Kilmers death to her friend. The next day, Hannah, her father
and Richard grief for Kilmer. This is an evidence of a great moral support and
understanding.
Richard understood Hannahs feelings. She was worried about her brother Otto
who was in the war in Europe fighting as an American soldier.
One can never feel lonely in this world if he or she has a true friend.

A friend helps us through difficult times

Pa broke his legs three years ago. Lewis and some others help him harvest the
crops. Otherwise, he would not manage. A friend in need is a friend indeed.
