TITLE OF THE STUDY

POWER CONSUMPTION
MONITORING SYSTEM

INTRODUCTION

In light of the increasing cost of electricity and the Global Warming campaigns to reduce general
electricity usage, there is a growing interest in analyzing power consumption in households. In recent
years, research into energy saving has been increasing in view of dealing with environmental problems
and effectively using energy resources. Although energy conservation has played an important role in
improving the energy efficiency of forest industries in the industrialized world, it has received less
attention by those industries in the developing countries. A growing awareness as to the importance of
reducing energy consumption is becoming widespread throughout the industry of developed countries,
resulting in conservation measures being adopted through capital expenditure, management
involvement and improved plant operation and maintenance. By analyzing the electricity usage of each
individual appliance separately, more accurate conclusions can be drawn on their efficiency and need
for replacement. Furthermore this can also determine whether an appliance is drawing unusually high
amounts of power when turned off and whether it should rather be unplugged. In this way electricity
consumption and cost can be reduced.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The purpose of this study is to develop a system in power consumption which can be used to monitor
and calculate electricity cost. The purpose of the study is to answer the following questions:

The main problem of the project is to assist users in tracking the bills, computing your appliances'
power consumption, learning power-saving tips. Specifically it attempted to answer the following
question:

1. How to design and develop a system called Power Consumption Monitoring System (PCMS) which will
be capable of:

a. Providing and efficient power monitoring system wherein the user can monitor their
electricity consumption.

b. Providing a system which can calculate the cost to operate of common household appliances.

c. Providing the user(s) to be up-to-date to notifications such us Power Maintenance advisories.

2. What will be the contents of the system?

3. How does the user accept the new system if implemented?

4. What are the disadvantages and advantages of power monitoring?

5. How to implement and deploy the PCMS software in order to reduce the usage of electricity.
