Method Statement For Lightening Protection System Installation
Method Statement For Lightening Protection System Installation
SCOPE
This document covers fixing air terminals and roof mesh arrangement of the lightning protection
system.
PURPOSE
The purpose of this procedure is to define the method of fixing air terminals and roof mesh
arrangement. This procedure is to define the step by step method to implement the
correct practices for the installation of this system through the guidelines contained herein so as to
ensure that the job execution complies with the project requirements and serves the intended
function to satisfactory level.
QUALITY CONTROL
Our project team consisting of a Project Manager, Electrical Engineer in charge for the
Installation, QA / QC Engineer and the site Foreman will ensure quality of installation and
materials at site. Quality of the work will be according to the BS standards, early streamer emission
(ESE) and local authority requirements.

EQUIPMENTS/ TOOLS /MATERIALS
Materials used
Lightning protection system welding material shall be in line with the approved material
submittal and approved drawings by authoritys rules and standards. They are;
1. Grinding Machine
2. Hand Drill
3. Tool box with wrenches and screwdrivers
4. Arc welding machine with accessories
5. Cad welding mold with accessories

WORK SEQUENCE AND METHODOLOGY
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
Prior to start the installation, concerned Engineer should ensure that approved shop drawings
related to the installation area are referred and that required materials are available at site as
per approved material submittals.
Ensure the installation of Lightning Systems are carried out in accordance with manufacturer's
installation recommendations, requirement of applicable standards and in accordance with
recognized industrial practices and specified project specification to ensure that installation
complies with requirements.
Ensure the materials are stored properly and there is no mark of damage or deformity of any
kind before issuing the material from site store. All materials and accessories should also be
free of dust, scale, or oil.
Ensure that the issued materials are of approved specifications / submittals and as per the
requirement of the area shop drawings. (i. e. Make, size, Model / Type etc.).

INSTALLATION OF ESE TYPE LIGHTEN ARRESTER & LIGHTENING COUNTER
AT THE ROOF TOP
The 25mm x 3mm Cu tape will be laid from of the ESE air terminal to the lightening
counter mounted at the roof top and from the lighten counter 25mm x 3mm Cu tape
will be laid up to MS rod grid around the building & connected through bi-metallic
joint
ESE air terminal will be mounted at the roof top as shown in the below figure.
5
INSTALLATION OF MS ROD GRID AROUND THE BUILDING
16mm MS rod will be installed around the whole building according to the shop
drawings
Resistance of MS rod to rod joint should be maintain < 0.5
The below figure shows how to make the Arc welding joint in between two crossing MS
rods by using plain MS Bar
All exposed aluminum windows & doors frames need to be connected to the nearest
down conductor. When connecting bi-metallic connectors to be used. (6mm cu cable
is sufficient for the connection) 2 cu cable is sufficient for the connection)
All metallic projections and metallic equipments on the roof and upper roof shall be
bonded to and from port of the lighting protection system.
The other Rods which will make the mesh arrangement will be started from the 16mm
MS Rod which were laid through the parapet wall.
Downward MS rod will be run through structural columns and connect to the building
pile caps as shown in the below figure.
6
INSTALLATION OF TEST BOX AND EARHING SYSTEM AT GROUND LEVEL
From the pile cap connection another MS rod will be run up to the Test Box mounted at
the ground floor
The MS Rod will be terminated to a bare Cu cable at the ground level via bimetallic
connector. (Rig foam covering should place to take the cable out from the column)
From the bimetallic connector, a copper cable of 95mm2 run up to Test Box and
terminated with cable lug (95x 8mm lug, Use the lug tool and then connect the lug to
the cable) which will connected Test Box terminals using the 8mm nut and bolt.
From the Test box 3 x 25 mm GI tape will run to the Earthing rod (20mm x 2400mm)
and connected via exothermic welding. ( Earthing Resistance should be maintain < 10
)
From the Test box another 3 x 25 mm GI tape will be connected to the ground ring of 3
x 25 mm GI tape run around the building.
