How Do You Want To Be Remembered?

by Rev. Chris Shorow, Senior Minister
Driving by the church the other day I was once again inspired by our statue of Moses braving the heat.
I’m proud of our church for participating in the City of Edmond’s public art display and I’m proud of
our church for offering a statue such as Moses, who was a faithful servant of God and sacrifices his own
needs for the good of God’s people.
Soon we’ll be searching for a new statue to go in front of our entrance to Breakfast on Boule-
vard—sheep. It was always Carol Roberts’ dream (Carol being one of the founders of BOB) to have
sheep outside BOB, symbolic of Jesus’ command to “feed my sheep.”
I am always fascinated by artists and how they portray people in art. One of my favorite statues is
Michaelangelo’s David. He sits royally upon a chair, holding the plates of the Ten Commandment, but
curiously, there are horns coming out of his head. That comes from one of the translations of scripture
stating Moses came down from the mountain with horns. The Hebrew word can also mean shafts of
light, which was probably what was intended, but forever Moses will be seen as having horns.
If you were to have a statue of yourself made, what would it look like? I’ve often wondered how I would like to be remem-
bered for the rest of eternity. Compassionate is the word I would hope others could use. The term in Greek is splanchneedzomai,
which literally means “gut-wrenching.” However, I would hate for my statue to be a huge rendition of “guts,” so I imagine a statue
of hands reaching out might suffice.
It is interesting and enlightening to consider how you would like to be remembered. In order for that to happen, we must
begin patterning our lives in that way. Hopefully, I can carry Christ’s compassion with me wherever I go. And hopefully if future
generations get around to the Chris Shorow statue—it won’t have horns!
