Introduction to film trailer

Hello there, my name is Ethan and welcome to my A2 Media Studies blog! My first love after my family is music:
When I listen to music, my imagination exudes emotions that causes me to visualise scenes, settings, scenarios,
landscapes and colours; so, when I got the brief for the A2 Media Portfolio I was extremely enthusiastic about
producing a film concept to create a trailer, film poster and magazine.

Romance genre
Inspired by one of my favourite songs; My all a love song; sung and written by Mariah Carey, I would like to
create a Romance genre film trailer. The song is about the yearning for an estranged lover to come back into
ones life. The video communicates the loneliness of heartbreak through the mise-en-scene of the black and
white filter, the open water, the long shots of the light house, head and shoulder shots and the occasional glimpse
of the lover moving in and out of scenes as a reference to the turbulent relationship:

CHORUS: I'd give my all to have

Just one more night with you

I'd risk my life to feel

Your body next to mine

Cause I can't go on

Living in the memory of our song

I'd give my all for your love tonight

Love is a frequent emotion that people, in one or more aspects, experience I their daily lives, so I thought that the
Romance genre would be an easier and more applicable genre to explore my creativity across a comprehensive
audience.
Introduction to film trailer

Thriller genre (Gothic motifs)

However, the symbolic features found in the My all video (written and featured in the previous page) has also
given me some inspiration to make the film trailer slightly gothic as well as being romantic. Therefore, the
concept for my film trailer derives from the essence of the song My all and its video: Romance with the
incorporations of gothic motifs.
Romantic gothicism especially its literature, is an emphasis on the emotions that are displayed after a typical
breakup, expressed in the music video for My all. The term Gothic literature refers to a style of writing that is
characterized by elements of fear, horror, death, and gloom, as well as romantic elements, such as nature,
individuality, and very high emotion. Therefore, gothic literature fits the bill of a medium that co-operates both
romance and thriller. Therefore, I will be referencing gothic literature for my trailer. Heres an example of a gothic
poem called The Ghost by Charles Baudelaire:

The Ghost
SOFTLY as brown-eyed Angels rove
I will return to thy alcove,
And glide upon the night to thee,
Treading the shadows silently.

And I will give to thee, my own,

Kisses as icy as the moon,
And the caresses of a snake
Cold gliding in the thorny brake.

And when returns the livid morn

Thou shalt find all my place forlorn
And chilly, till the falling night.

Others would rule by tenderness

Over thy life and youthfulness,
But I would conquer thee by fright!

This poem communicates the likeness of a ghost and its expressions of love as it attempts to haunt thee. The
poem uses a lot of cold imagery as it focuses on the romantic gothic elements of nature and solitude. For my film
trailer I would like to infuse gothic literature in the narrative and focus on nature and loneliness as two of the
prime features of gothicism within my trailer. For this I would like to film outside in nature as well as mainly
focusing on only one actor/narrative voice in the trailer.
