Q1. The force F, acting in a constant direction on the

20-lb block, has a magnitude which varies with the F (lb)
position s of the block. Determine the velocity of the
block after it slides 1 ft. When s = 0 the block is moving
to the right at 6 ft/s. The coefficient of kinetic friction
between the block and surface is k = 0.1.

F = 30s2

s (ft)

Answer: v2 = 7.31 ft/s

Q2. The 70-kg skater passes point A with a speed of 3 m/s. Determine his speed when he reaches
point B and the normal force exerted on him by the track at this point. Neglect friction.

7.5 m Not to scale

Answer: Fn = 618 N

You MUST show a clear free body diagram with each solution. (Coordinate axes, forces and their directions.)

Q3. The 4-kg collar is released from rest at A and travels

along the smooth vertical guide. Determine the speed of
the collar when it reaches position B. Also, find the
normal force exerted on the collar at this position. The
spring has an unstretched length of 150 mm.

Answer: Fn = 134 N

Q4. The spring bumper is used to stop the

1800-lb steel billet in the rolling mill. v = 6 ft/s B k2
A k1
Determine the maximum displacement of
the plate A if the billet strikes the plate with k1
a speed of 6 ft/s. Neglect the mass of the
springs, rollers and the plates A and B.
k2
Take k1 = 1500 lb/ft, k2 = 2250 lb/ft.

Answer: SA = 1.06 ft
