Richmond developer and philanthropist Milan Ilich
and Olympic CEO John Furlong are among those who will
be awarded the Order of B.C., the province announced
Friday.
The award recognizes excellence and achievements of
British Columbians, and is the highest honour awarded
by the provincial government.
Ilich, a longtime Richmond resident, has built infra-
structure across the province, has advanced professional
and amateur sports and supported numerous charitable
causes over the years.
Furlong is one of Canada’s most influential sport leaders
and the man behind the team that organized and delivered
the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

McNulty said Ilich has contributed “so much to the com-
munity with very little recognition.” Furlong, he added, put

Honours well
deserved
S
ince the inception of the Order of B.C. in
1989, 287 British Columbians have been
honoured with the distinction.
Now 15 more deserving residents of our province
will receive the award. Among them are two truly
worthy gentlemen: Milan Ilich and John Furlong.
It’s a rare and special individual who gives back as
much as Milan Ilich.
For years, he has generously helped to support
various community projects. A $1 million dona-
tion from the Maureen and Milan Ilich Foundation
kicked off a fundraising campaign in 2007 that led
to the Richmond Hospital acquiring a new Magnetic
Resonance Imaging machine and CT scanner, both
located inside the medical imaging centre named in
their honour.
But Ilich’s generosity dates back much further. For
years he has supported the arts, sports and other
worthwhile endeavours. In 1988 he helped to save
pro soccer by purchasing the Vancouver Whitecaps,
then a member of the Canadian Soccer League. He
later helped to bring the Western Hockey League
back to Vancouver by investing in the Giants.
Through all his philanthropic work, Ilich has always
retained a humble nature and doesn’t overlook the
little guys. His foundation recently gifted the fami-
lies left homeless due to a Knightsbridge townhouse
fire $15,000.
Ilich’s nature of giving back isn’t lost on Furlong.
Here’s a man who cared so much about his commu-
nity, province and country, that he brought the sec-
ond biggest sporting event in the world to town.
