Lecture 5: Problems: Vapour Pressure

Note
Recommended problems are marked with [R].

The problems are rated as follows:

* are basic problems testing core concepts or skills. You must be able to do all of these
problems.
** are applied and/or intermediate problems, and you should be able to do all of these
problems.
*** are advanced problems that presents a challenge. You are encouraged to try these
problems and should be able to do them if you are aiming for a first class pass.
**** are advanced problems that often incorporate work outside the bounds of this course.
They can be used to deepen your understanding of the work, but are not for examination
purposes.

Vapour Pressure

1. *F&F Exercise 2.13.1

2. [R]*At approximately what temperature will water boil at top of Mount Everest (elevation
8 850 m above sea level). {70C}

3. *At approximately what temperature will water boil in Johannesburg (elevation 1 750 m
above sea level). {96C}

4. *At approximately what elevation will water boil at 90 C? {3 000 m}

5. [R]** Water at 75C is placed in a beaker in an airtight container. Air is gradually pumped
out of the container. What reduction below standard sea level atmospheric pressure must
be achieved before the water boils? {62 kPa}

6. ** A submarine is situated 1000 m below sea level. The pressure inside the submarine is
controlled. If water inside the submarine boils at a temperature of 90C, what is the pressure
difference between the inside and outside of the submarine? Take the density of sea water
as 1 023 kg/m3. {10067 kPa or 10.067 mPa}
