Three-letter words

Three-letter words are a natural progression from two-letter words. They are
an essential weapon in every Scrabble players armoury. Its worth trying to
become familiar with them all, but if thats a tall order then you should at
least focus on those that can be formed as one-letter extensions (hooks) of
two-letter words (before or after) and strive to be familiar with those that
contain a higher-scoring letter (three points or more).

6 | Short words

There are 1,341 valid three-letter words in Scrabble, all of which are listed in
this section, showing which can take an S extension. The list includes plurals
of two-letter words to emphasise these. Not all the threes are valuable in
Scrabble but are all listed here for completeness.

Suffixes

Suffixes are just as useful as prefixes for the same reasons, but it can be less

LY
easy to spot opportunities to employ them. Therefore, its a good idea to
study the lists of the most commonly available suffixes to help you find those
elusive bonus words. This list is also useful for studying which adjective stems
also form adverbs, as a glance at the -LY list demonstrates.

N
As with the prefixes list, words which end in the suffix letters by coincidence
rather than etymology are excluded. For example, ENCAGE is omitted from
the AGE words, DEMOLISH is omitted from the ISH words. Example of words
omitted, if any, are given at the start of each suffix list.

O
Unlike prefixes though, the root part of the word may not always be a
stand-alone word because often the root is modified when the suffix is added
(eg DUTIFUL, EQUABLE).
E
Words 6-8 in length ending in the suffix ABLE
PL

Some can be pluralized as shown by the s. The addition of -ABLY shows where
valid adverbial forms are allowed.

Words that happen to end in ABLE but not as a suffix are excluded so words
such as BISTABLE and OVERABLE are omitted.

144 | Unique beginnings and endings

Here are some fascinating words with unique beginnings and endings to
impress your opponents with, some perhaps more useful in Scrabble than
others. Note that in some cases with beginnings there are other forms of the
same word or its plural form that also begin with the same two letters (eg
ZLOTE ZLOTYS ZLOTIES ZLOTYCH are also valid as well as ZLOTY but it is still
worthy of being considered a word with a unique beginning. An additional list

While duplicate vowels on your rack can be a real pain, having too many

vowels in general can be frustrating. For this reason, its helpful to have a
number of light words up your sleeve words that contain a high proportion
of vowels. The lists of light words include words from three to six letters,
excluding S plurals, where more than half the letters are vowels. In addition
there are lists of vowel-heavy seven- and eight-letter bonus words. In this
case they include S plurals. The sevens and eights are those with five or more
vowels. Seven-letter words with four vowels are in abundance and not
considered especially vowel heavy.

Heavy words

In contrast to light words, heavy words have a high proportion of

consonants. Arranged by word-length, these lists contain words with no
vowels (and no Ys), words with Y as the only vowel, and words of six-letters
with only one vowel (AEIOUY). Plurals ending in S have not been included in
these lists. Even if you have a rack of seven consonants you may only need an

appropriate vowel on the board to use four or five of them.
