Horticulturist
The cultivation of a garden, orchard, or nursery; the cultivation of flowers, fruits,
vegetables, or ornamental plants. A horticulturist goes one step beyond and knows
the science behind different plants, flowers, and greenery. They conduct research
in gardening and landscaping, plant propagation, crop production, plant breeding,
genetic engineering, plant biochemistry, and plant biology.

Duties and responsibilities

Horticultural duties involve landscaping and grounds maintenance. For example,
the horticulturist for one Washington public agency is the greenhouse manager,
whose duties include designing displays, cultivating gardens and indoor displays,
and performing maintenance work in and around the citys greenhouses. Duties
also include use of chemicals, supervising grounds personnel and giving
presentations. Central Piedmont Community College requires a college degree for
its horticulturist, who supervises and trains workers in landscaping design and
maintenance, grounds and greenhouse maintenance and use of irrigation systems
and plant biology.
