Project Goal:
The Cincinnati Nature has acquired the Groesbeck Lodge and plans for it to become the Center for
Conservation and Stewardship(CCS).
CCS mission statement: The Center will act as a community resource by promoting research,
developing education programs and helping people become better stewards of the land in
Greater Cincinnati.
Project Building Specifications:

7,880 square feet
two and a half story Tudor Revival Fieldstone Country House
The CNC Executive director, Bill Hopple, will provide all the required space need for the CCS.
The spaces to be included are: conference/meeting spaces, research labs, classrooms/training
rooms, a small retail gift shop, and ADA accessible restrooms.
The design for CCS should embrace the historical style and preserve craftsmanship.
Sustainability is to be incorporated when possible.
Areas of focus should includes: improved indoor air quality, energy efficiency, and efficient
material usage.
If needed the outbuildings highlighted on the site plans may be used for space accommodations.

official also noted that because of the construction materials in this home, there is an inherent
decreased fire risk - it has interior stone floors and stone exterior walls with a plaster interior finish,
contributing to the leniency on the automatic fire sprinkler requirement.

Universal Design:
Universal Design is to design spaces to be usable by ALL people to the greatest
extent possible.
The goal will be to allow to every person regardless of age, ability, height to be
able to come to the CCS and enjoy all of the education and experiences they
provide.
Ronald L. Mace, a fellow of the American Institute of Architects, explained, "The

universal design concept increases the supply of usable housing by including
universal features in as many houses as possible, and allows people to remain in
their homes as long as they like.

Sound control is important for health of occupants, productivity, and
comfort level for employees and guests.

The CCS has multiple functions happening at one time in separate
spaces with the building. This will require acoustical privacy

between each function.

Concept Statement
The Groesbeck Lodge will transform into an inspiring space to

cultivate a sense of community and love for nature. The color
scheme will set the tone. A neutral color palette of whites, grays,
and creams will reflect the English Tudor Revival style of the
lodge. Earthy greens and blues will be sprinkled throughout the
space to honor nature and bring a calming sense to the space for
visitors and employees. Vertical lines will be used throughout the
interior to pay tribute to the Tudor style and to bring the illusion of
height in the event areas. The space will be functional with
modern day conveniences within the arts and crafts style. Natural
materials will be used in finishes and furnishings to bring nature
into the center. Overall the design will marry function with beauty
through an appreciation of the beautiful surrounding nature.

Section 16:
Justification
The materials and finishes selected for the retail space were all
selected based on function and aesthetic factors. The paints
are all from Benjamin Moore which carries a product called
Aura. This paint contains zero VOCs and is highly durable for a
commercial setting. All of the flooring options have sustainable
features and can withstand heavy use. They are also slip
resistance and stain resistance. The furniture selected is high
quality and compliments the design of the space. Option one
is a more traditional choice and option two leans toward a
modern design. Overall the design brings together natural
materials to reflect the mission of the CCS.

Section 16:
Justification
The materials and finishes selected for the spaces were all selected
based on function and aesthetic factors. The paints are all from
Benjamin Moore which carries a product called Aura. This paint
contains zero VOCs and is highly durable for a commercial setting. All
of the flooring options can withstand heavy use and they are also slip
resistance and stain resistance. The ADA restroom finishes were
selected to withstand the wet environment and the fixtures are all ADA
compliant if installed correctly. The furniture throughout the spaces
were selected for each function. The office furniture have ergonomic
qualities. The upholstery has passed the flammability testing and is
durable for heavy use. When possible sustainable products were
chosen over unsustainable options. Overall the design brings together
natural materials to reflect the mission of the CCS.
