Insulation is installed on the bottom head of a vessel using a floating ring and radial metallic bands. A final layer of insulation is secured using metallic wire with a 50mm minimum overlap. An aluminum jacket is then secured over the insulation using radial tensioned metallic bands anchored to circumferential vessel bands and a floating ring. Supports such as lugs or strips must also be installed on the vessel skirt at a maximum spacing of 500mm to support the insulation system.

In all skirt supported vessels, insulation supports are provided in the
equipment drawings. Procedure: 1.Shaped insulation shall be installed on bottom head. Insulation shall be held in position by making use of galvanized iron floating ring (25mm X 0.6mm) placed over the insulation and positioned in the center of the head. 2. Insulation shall be held in position by use of radial metallic band, one end of which shall be fastened to floating ring and other end shall be anchored to the bands placed around cylindrical section close to the head. 3. Final layer shall be held in position by metallic wire. Cladding should have min overlap of 50mm. 4. Aluminum jacket shall be secured in position by radial tensioned metallic bands anchored to circumferential band of vessel on one side and fastened to 6mm dia. floating ring as shown below. Method of insulating vessel skirt
1. If lugs/support strips are not installed then number of lugs welded on
the skirt minimum to be 4 pieces at maximum spacing 500mm as shown below.
2. At cryogenic operation temperatures, instead of lugs, a continuous strip
(4mm) to be installed and seal welded. At single layer system * T, at a double layer system * T, at triple layer system 5/6 * T.
