TAKEAWAY

The project India-Nepal relations was a good experience for the researcher .in the initial
stage researcher was not aware about the special relations between India and Nepal . So to
start the project, clearing the doubt was important and thus it was fund that in the recent past
this field has become a topic of great concern and debates.

Geo-politics 1s an essential variable in moulding the security considerations of a nation. It

helps the nation to recognize its friends and foes in international politics and _accordingly
formulate its defence and alliance system. The study analyses the security arrangements
between India and Nepal which are guided by geographical location and close historical and
cultural relationship. Nepal is nearer to the sensitive Himalayan states of India which are
restricted to the entry of the non-Indians. The Himalayan ranges of Garhwal and Kumaon in
the north-west of Uttar Pradesh are demanding a separate statehood and the hills of north-east
are surrounded with extremists and militants of Nagaland, Mizoram.1 Nepal is near to the
sensitive areas of India and through its mountainous passes, it is easy to enter into the plains
and hills of India and exploit the already existing problems to their advantage.

The most unique security relationship between India and Nepal is the recruitment of
Ghurkha soldiers in the Indian Army. The left oriented Nepalese and political parties have
been critical on the recruitment of the Ghurkhas which is considered as an exploitation of the
human resources by the dominant neighbours. Other Nepalese including the Ghurkhas, feel
that unless and until the grassroots infrastructure is developed in Nepal, the recruitment will
continue. Otherwise, the Nepalese would look forward to the Government of Nepal for
employment opportunities.2 Hence the CPN (UML) gave up its opposition for the same, once

it came to power. The researcher found that the ideological differences between democratic
India and Communist Nepal will not affect their relationship

The normalisation of relations between India and China also lessens the Indian anxiety
towards any physical danger arising from the north and also lessens its sensitivity towards
Nepal for its security interest. However, the study perceives new dimensions of security
threats to India which makes it sensitive towards Nepal.

The age-old open border between India and Nepal has been responsible for developing
people to people contact. However, the population movement from north to south has
resulted in settlements of a large number of Nepalis in India especially in the sensitive north-
eastern Border region. The possibility of Pan-Nepali movement, though distant at present is a
potential threat of danger.

The researcher is also thankful to the Faculty of Political Science who provided their support
to the researcher in every step of the research.
