Preparation of Serum

Objective: To prepare blood components and use them in appropriate test/analysis.

Apparatus and Materials:


1. Venipuncture set
2. Centrifuge Machine
3. Test Tube
4. Applicator Stick

I. Procedure:
1. Place 3 mL of whole blood in a test tube.
2. Allow the blood to clot for 10 minutes at room temperature.
3. Check for complete clotting by inclining the tube gently, and when blood does not ooze
from the clot centrifuge the blood preparation for 10 minutes at 2500 rpm.
4. After centrifugation, the uppermost layer designates the serum and is transferred into
another tube.
5. Serum is ready for analysis.
