CHE 301 EXAM#3

Name: .
CWID:
1) (10 points) A 2m diameter cylindrical water tank rotates at 24 rpm. If
pressure at the center of bottom surface of tank is 50 kPa, find the pressure
at the edge of bottom surface.

2) (10 points) Calculate the terminal velocity of a sphere with a radius of 2 cm,
and density of 2500 kg/m3, in a liquid with density of 800 kg/m 3 and
viscosity of 0.04 kg/(m.s). Assume Stockes law is applicable.

3) (25 points) We are planning to scale up a rotating reactor, which rotates with
the velocity Vr. The diameter of reactor is D and length L. Fluid with
velocity Vf, density f, and viscosity f enters the tank. Find all of the
dimensionless groups for the scale up of this rotating reactor. Water viscosity
is 1x10-3 kg/(m.s) and water density is 1000Kg/m3.

4) (25 points) Water is flowing from a 60 m elevation reservoir to a turbine via

100 m cast iron piping system of 17.5 cm pipe radius, at flow rate of 48
m3/min. The overall turbine generator efficiency is 0.75. Neglect exit water
velocity from the turbine. There are one flanged and one treaded 90-degree
elbows used in the piping system. Find the electricity generated by this
turbine.

5) (30 points) A Newtonian laminar fluid with constant density and viscosity
enters a vertical pipe of radius R (consider a cylindrical coordinate). The
entering velocity and pressure of fluid are V1 and P1. The flow is symmetric
with respect to (e.g., V = 0 and variations of all dependent variables with
respect to are zero). Initially the pipe is filled with stationary liquid.
a) Develop transient continuity and momentum equations and boundary and
initial conditions for flow in this pipe.
b) If the flow becomes steady and fully developed (V r = 0), write down
continuity and momentum equations and find an expression for V z as a
function of r, R, and V1.
