Delhi-Meerut Expressway

Delhi meerut expressway in an 96km under construction expressway connecting delhi with
meerut via NH 24 passing through Ghaziabad. It is being developed as an access controlled
expressway. The current NH24 is being widened into a 14 lane expressway to ease the traffic.
Once completed, the expected travel time between delhi and meerut would reduce to 45-60
mins instead of the current 2 hours it takes.

The total cost of the project is estimated to be about rs 6,500 crores including land
acquisition.
It is divided into 4 sections:
Section 1
From Nizammudin bridge in delhi to UP gate, Ghaziabad. The total length in 8.7kms. The
contract for this section was won by Welspun Group, and had been sub-contracted to gawar
construction limited.
Section 2
Delhi-UP Border-dasna stretch. It is a 19.2 km long phase of the project, being constructed by
apco infratech.
Section 3
Dasna- Hapur. This is 22.2km stretch. The land acquisition for this phase is still under
arbitration due to some villaeges being unhappy with the amount of compensation they have
received. Hence it is leading to a delay.

Section 4
Dasna- Meerut. This is the final stretch of 46km till meerut. Work is yet to begin and
contracted in this final phase.

The work on this project started in September 2016 and is expected that the expressway will
become operational by april 2019.
The major hurdles faced by the project currently are land acquisition. 19 villages have been
acquired, but 12 of them have moved court citing inadequate compensation for their lands.
The matter is under sub judice as of now. Another concern with the project is the shifting of
transmission lines for power from the area. These lines are a crucial line for electricity needs
in the nearby areas.
Currently the travel time on NH24 between delhi and meerut is 2 hours. After the completion and
once it is operational, the stretch will become signal free and reduce the travel time to between 45
mins-1 hour. It will also improve UP's Infrastructure development. The expressway will also give
boost to the real estate sector in areas surrounding the expressway as faster connectivity to delhi
will encourage potential buyers to shift base to ncr. Also it will lead to price appreciation in areas
such as vaishali, raj nagar etc.
