Math and Math Workshop
First grade is starting the year with a mathematics
unit called Solve Addition and Subtraction
Problems to 10, from the Envisions Math 2.0
Curriculum. This unit is an introduction to
mathematical ideas such as counting, using addition
and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems,
understand and use fact family knowledge (3+4=7
so 4+3=7). Throughout the unit, students will
engage in many of the 8 mathematical practices.
They are asked to share their reasoning and
explanations in an accurate way that makes sense
to them.
Science and Social Studies
In Science, we will be studying force and motion,
which includes push, pull, and magnets.
In Social Studies we will be studying school rules,
school workers, leaders in our school and
community, as well as the difference between
rules and laws.

Writers Workshop
This is the time of day that we become authors
and illustrators. Children will be encouraged to
write sentences to describe their classmates by
the use of sharing All About Me bags. Students
will learn to use a circle map to brainstorm ideas
before they write sentences. We will also begin
writing personal narratives.
Literacy
We will begin Shared Reading lessons and
Interactive Reading Lessons. With these lessons
students will learn valuable reading skills with the
use of poems, fiction stories, and nonfiction
stories. As we read these stories, we will work on
many comprehension strategies, such as visualizing,
clarifying, asking questions, making connections,
predicting, and summarizing. At the beginning of
first grade, we will focus on sight words, blending,
and segmenting words. We will also begin reviewing
the sounds of every letter of the alphabet.
Students will also begin to build their stamina for
independent reading by participating in The
Balanced Literacy Program. This program trains
students to read to themselves, read with a
partner, while teachers work with groups of
students on their specific needs.
Reminders
Volunteers: If you would like to volunteer at the
school, please register through CMS website!
Homework: Please have your child read each night
using the temporary homework/agendas until the
official agendas arrive.
Agenda: Please make sure to purchase an agenda
for your child, $5.
Thursday Folder: Thursday folders go home each
Thursday, please try to return on Friday. Keep your
childs work and return all necessary papers.
