CNT 280 SME Server Installation

This lab covers downloading, installing and then modifying the SME Server software that
comprises a Linux sealed server. Depending on the level of ability of the user, some
steps may be skipped.

Steps: (Document exactly what steps occurred)

1. Do a search for the SME Server results should point to the contribs.org web
site. From contribs.org, down both the server install .iso file (for i386) and the manual.
What were the files you downloaded and how large was each file?

2. What is the exact version of SME Server you will install (initially 7.5.1)? .

3. Create a SME Server boot (CD-ROM) disk. Test to be sure it will boot your
target computer. What was the total disk useage on the CD created? Get instructor
initials here before continuing

4. Configure the computer you will use and the network connection as necessary.
Typically, you will want the have a firmware router as the communications device
between your server computer and the internet for the initial install. Know your gateway
address. It will be best to use a private address range for the SME server install.

5. Boot the SME install CD. Use the following guidelines for initial installation.
Note that you can alter your installation parameters and reload the server later if desired.

Item Suggested setting Notes

Initial domain <yourteamname>.org *
name
Initial server name <yourteamname>-SME

Initial IP address in same subnet with your

gateway router.
Initial server Server only (router is your gateway)
setting
Initial Password alaska ie: CNT280
This will be altered later.
DHCP Server NO (let the router handle it for now)

Other settings Default most of them

* WE will NOT be placing any SME server resources on the world wide web. Thus, you
can use a fully-qualified domain name in the .ORG naming area.

6. After installing reboot. What are the initial choices for your SME server?
7. Can you log on to CLI with a SME server and HOW?

8. Test your internet connection via the initial menu. Correct your settings if
necessary.

9. From a client on the same subnet as your new SME server, use a web browser to
browse to your new server using its IP address. What appears? What port was activated
on your server, if any?

10. Now browse to the same spot and add /server-manager to your typed URL.
i.e. http://192.168.1.10/server-manager -- What happens? How do you log in?

11. Now that you have an idea of how you will manage your server, become familiar
with the initial SME Server WEBMIN menus. You can consult the manual you
downloaded to make some of the following steps easier.

12. Attempt to create and access the besic web site supplied with the SME server
install package. Demonstrate access to the web site created.

REMEMBER Your case study requires you to attempt the file sharing proof on the
SME server. CAN you successfully complete the file sharing prrof lab with te SME
server? Ultimately that is the question you have to answer in the SME server lab.

Note that there may be new releases of add-ons available for the SME server. You should
also determine using additional open-source software or add-ons will satisfy the file
sharing requirements.
