GET-GO exactly what they wanted, builder Lana
Damjanovic says. A young couple with three small children,
they had commissioned her firm to build their new home in
Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. In the kitchen, their attention
was focused on the potential view of the beautiful backyard.
They could see that their kids would be out there all the time,
and they wanted a space that would overlook everything, she

make themand the yardthe focal point of the room.
Seven identical two-over-two double-hung windows on
adjacent walls fill the room with light during the day. The glass
appears to rest on the perimeter countertops. It really helps the
space feel warm and bright, Damjanovic says.

LIKE GIVING AN OLD LADY A
FACELIFT. Thats how Warren Bohn, of Bohn
Architecture and Design, describes the major kitchen renovation
in a 110-year-old Victorian house in New Jersey that the owners
use as a summer getaway. Although the kitchen is in service only
a few months out of the year, its definitely put through its paces.
In addition to preparing meals for their own family, the
homeowners regularly host dinners for 20 or more guests. It was
essential that the new space be functional and well organized,
with a floor plan that would allow easy movement among work
areas without creating traffic jams.
Working with Monmouth Custom Builders, Bohns first
order of business was to gut the existing, disorganized galley-style
kitchen, walk-in pantry, and separate breakfast area. That alone
boosted the usable square footage by a third without increasing the
houses footprint. The additional space is all the more important
because the family keeps a kosher kitchen, which requires two of
nearly everythingappliances, cookware, and dishesas well as
plenty of dedicated storage.
The homeowners wanted a sleek, contemporary kitchen that
could take a lot of summertime activity and still maintain its

the boxes of Craftsman design small in size, big on charm,
and exquisite in workmanship and detail. The kitchen, however,
hadnt aged as well as the rest of the house. At just 150 square feet,
it was cramped, disorganized, and choppy.
An addition doubled the size of the kitchen and opened its
flow into the living space. Adding square footage was the easy
part, though. More difficult was filling that space with a sense of
place, especially in a home with such a rich heritage.I wanted the
space to feel authentic and blend into the rest of the house, says
kitchen designer Angela Otten, who masterminded the project
along with architectural designer Josh Hayton. Their goal: create
a warm, Craftsman-inspired kitchen that could comfortably
accommodate two cooks.
Before they could fine-tune the details, the design team had to
determine how best to orient the kitchen within the framework
of the ceiling beams, which connect the new space with the
homes existing architecture. Aligning a large island with the
beams creates balance and symmetry and helps ground the room.
The island also provides seating for guests and a comfortable spot
for casual family meals.
Work zones keep things organized and efficient a cooking
zone with spices and utensils, a cleanup area with two dishwashers
and pullout trash receptacles, and a prep space with baking items
and cutting boards. Countertop garages with lift-up doors keep
small appliances tucked away but ready for use. A walk-in pantry
and butlers pantry amplify storage outside the main work core.

Homeowner and designer Kim Mauney had the wood floor painted in large white
and gray diamonds for a light and airy look.
ON A TYPICAL DAY, a visitor calling
on the Mauney family is likely to find them all
hanging out in and around the remodeled kitchen
at the rear of their 1930s home in Charlotte. Kim,
an interior designer, might be prepping food at
the marble-topped island. Her husband, David,
will be working on his laptop at the table in the
nearby breakfast room. And the three kids might
be conjuring up sweet treats in the scullery, which
connects to the kitchen via a pretty pass-through.
That visitor, however, will notice that all these
typical kitchen activities dont look like theyre
taking place in a typical kitchen. Kim wanted it to
look like a formal room rather than a kitchen, says
designer Emily Bourgeois, who worked with Kim
on the kitchen during a whole-house remodel led
by architect Frank Smith. We built the cabinets

A SPACIOUS OPEN FLOOR PLAN
remains one of the most popular home design elements. But
project manager Andrew Patterson and senior interior designer
Danielle Krieg of Stuart Silk Architects can tell you that its
possible to have too much of this usually good thing.
This home had a stark, almost institutional feel to it,
Patterson says of the Mercer Island, Washington, home they
were tasked with updating. Once we gutted the area where
the kitchen, dining, and family room would be, we had an
exceptional amount of space. That open design and spaciousness
can be a bonus, but some of the challenges included defining
areas without borders and ensuring efficiency for cooking and
great flow around the kitchen. A support post in the middle of
the space added another design hurdle.
The homeowners, serious cooks who love to entertain and
have a college-age daughter, were all about minimalist style and
design experimentation. But they also wanted warmth, Krieg
says. The interiors were quite dark, too.
Ultra-crisp white on the walls, glossy lacquer on the upper
cabinets, and quartz-surfacing countertops instantly brightened
things up. Base cabinets of rift-cut oak and hardwood flooring
deliver the warmth the homeowners were looking for. The
horizontal grain on the cabinet fronts also emphasizes the
kitchens repeating linear dynamic, anchored by two extra-

done right, do it yourself is an easy motto to
adoptbut not always easy to execute. It wasnt a
problem for Susan Hunt, however, as she mapped
out plans for her new Coronado, California,
kitchen. An interior designer and builder, Susan
knew exactly what she wantedand how to
achieve it.
Inspired by the challenge of her homes small
footprint, Susan set to work creating a plan that
would maximize function while also delivering
the breezy, coastal look she loves. She wanted the
kitchen to be first and foremost a place to relax with
her familyhusband Mark, their two children, and
her mother. Creating a connection to the homes
beach environment was also important.
Since we have a coastal home, I wanted lots
of windows and white walls to keep everything
feeling fresh and bright and airy, Susan says. The
blue tongue-and-groove ceiling is a reminder of the
ocean, while the tan backsplash tile is a reminder of
the sand.
The interior doesnt just mimic the outdoor
surroundingsit throws itself wide open to them.
The conception of the space started with what
Susan calls the best seat in the house: a bar built in
the style of a surfboard. The bar sits below a bifold the plan
window outside the kitchen proper, and provides a
transition area from the interior to a covered porch
and outdoor patio. The bifold window opens across
the top of the bar, and a door is located to the side.
People love sitting there, because you can be a part
of conversations going on both inside and outside,
Susan says.

We created a space that was
functional for cooking and entertaining,
but that is still timeless in feel.
LISSA LEE HICKMAN, DESIGNER
DRAWN BY IDYLLIC SCENERY and a
most agreeable climate, Connecticut residents Grant Ulrick and
Donna Krebs-Ulrick settled on Scottsdale, Arizona, as the perfect
place to build a second home.Their new abode pays tribute to the
Spanish missions theyve visited through the years; the skillfully
designed kitchen and adjacent living spaces combine to create a
spacious, stylish setting for the parties Donna loves to stage.
I really wanted a kitchen designed for entertaining, says
Donna, who hosted 80 guests in the great-room shortly after
moving into the home.Last Christmas morning, our Connecticut
family was hanging out in the kitchen making waffles. We threw
open the doors to take in the wonderful Arizona breezes. There
was room for everyoneit was great!
The kitchens greatness relies on its open plan, a second island
designed for gathering, and reproduction furnishings, fittings,
and fixtures, says designer Lissa Lee Hickman, who worked with
Donna on the homes interiors. The kitchen needed to work
for parties and be the homes cozy hub, Hickman says. It had to
maintain the integrity of the Spanish architecture and make the
most of the valley and sunset views.
Doors in the breakfast area and family room open to loggias,
a pool, and panoramas. Inside, a coffered ceiling with weathered
beams and tiled insets, glazed and stained cabinet finishes, corbels,
and handcrafted details evoke historic haciendas and 18th-
century religious outposts.

GOOD THINGS COME TO THOSE
WHO WAITespecially if they put that wait to good
use. Una Fogarty spent 15 years defining and refining her vision
for the kitchen in her once-neglected Victorian summer home
in Bellport, New York, biding her time until the perfect moment
to renovate. As she waited, her original vision for a beachy,
white Hamptons kitchen was colored by the homes spirited
character. Like all good decisions, Una says, if you have time
to make them, theyre better. Rehabbing other rooms in the
home revealed exquisite pine floors and dazzling stained glass,
but the kitchen demanded a deeper treatment. The last remaining
relic of the homes fixer-upper past, the large room was packed
with challenges, including a cavernous attached laundry room
and particleboard floors. Una and her architect husband, Chris,
reconfigured the space, shrinking the laundry room to allow for
more square footage in the kitchen, as well as a new fireplace in
the adjacent dining area. They also added a side door to improve
the flow to their generous porch, which is ideal for entertaining.

LIKE ANY THOUGHTFULLY
created space, this chic and elegant master bath is
the product of a designer listening carefully before
ever picking up a pencil. Interior designer Valarie
Britz had worked with the owners before and
knew that they were partial to black and white
but this time their request was to soften the space
and give it a more feminine feel. They were also
keen on avoiding the nautical kitsch often found in
waterfront homes.
We wanted the master bath to feel very

charming with a modern edge, Britz says of
the home in St. Simons Island, Georgia. The
homeowners love the elegant sophistication that
comes with black and white but felt it was very
masculine. By working in shades of gray and being
mindful of sharp details, the space became warmer
with more feminine qualities.

GLASS MOSAIC TILES on the walls, an egg-
shape soaking tub, and a spacious shower with a curved back wall
give this bath dramatic presence. But a subdued palette of soft
gray, white, silver, and chocolate tones ensures the spa-like retreat
is also soothing and sophisticated. Its just the right balance for
the homeowners, Canadians who dreamed of a second home
in sunny Arizona filled with organic materials and plenty of
pampering amenities.
The homes inviting style is a far cry from the original
architectural plans approved for the site, which called for a
Southwest-style home with adobe walls and low ceilings.
Rather than navigate the complicated permitting process again,
the homeowners elected to work with the existing plans and
called on interior designer Suzanne Biers (with whom they had
worked on previous projects) to tweak the design to suit their
more contemporary tastes.
In the master bath, this meant finding another place for the
yoga room that was originally situated in the space now occupied
by the shower, and rearranging the flow of the suite to create
space for two vanities and a dressing table, as well as two closets
and two separate toilet compartments. All these amenities allow
the space to function almost like two separate bathrooms that
overlap each other. It allows the homeowners to get ready and
not feel like they are right on top of each other, Biers says.

A MASTER BATH THAT EMBRACES
THE OUTDOORS, yet still offers privacy? Sounds
like a tricky proposition. But at Cecilia Hirkos home in La
Quinta, California, the solution was perfectly clear: A bank of
nearly floor-to-ceiling windows that offers soothing views of a
walled garden.I know the term is overused, but I really wanted a
spa-like experience to bring the outdoors inside, Cecilia says.
The entire garden wall is covered with a flowering vine, and
hummingbirds visit our feeders in the morning. Its just so bright
and beautiful. This is one of my favorite rooms in the house.
To underscore the rooms modern, less-is-more ambitions,
interior designer Kathleen DiPaolo opted for streamlined metal
trim on the windows that boldly frames the outdoor view. The
window frames bring your eye across, so the room looks even
more expansive when you enter, DiPaolo says. The clean lines
really modernize the space.
Basking in sunlight, a simple, organic-shape freestanding tub

luxurious ones. A wall-to-wall vanity with integrated sinks in the

a conjoining room serves as the bathing area. The freestanding tub
